Kristiansund BK – Club History
Kristiansund BK was founded in 1961 in Kristiansund, a coastal city on the western coast of Norway known for bacalao (dried cod) and fishing traditions. The club competed in the lower divisions of Norwegian football for decades before their dramatic rise to the Eliteserien. Under coach Christian Michelsen, Kristiansund won promotion to the Eliteserien in 2016 and immediately established themselves as a competitive top-flight club with an attractive playing style that earned them widespread admiration in Norwegian football. Their home ground, Atlanten Stadion, creates an intimate and atmospheric setting for Norwegian top-flight competition.
Kristiansund's sustained Eliteserien presence and their regular top-half finishes represented an extraordinary achievement for a small coastal city with limited traditional football resources. The club's ability to develop players, recruit cleverly, and maintain a consistent identity under Michelsen's long-term management became a model studied by other Norwegian clubs seeking to maximise limited budgets.
