Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium
The Sukru Saracoglu Stadium is the legendary home of Fenerbahce SK, located at Recep Peker Caddesi in the Kadikoy district of Istanbul, on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus. The stadium holds 50,530 spectators and has been Fenerbahce's home since 1908 in various forms, with the current structure substantially rebuilt and expanded in the 1990s. Named after Sukru Saracoglu, a former Prime Minister and President of Turkey who also served as Fenerbahce's president, the stadium occupies a prominent position overlooking the Sea of Marmara in one of Istanbul's most beloved and culturally distinct neighbourhoods.
Fenerbahce are one of Turkey's most successful and most supported clubs, with 19 Super Lig titles and a passionate fanbase that draws from Istanbul's Asian side and extends across Turkey and the wider Turkish diaspora. The club holds the distinction of being the first Turkish club to reach the semi-finals of a major UEFA competition when they reached the Champions League quarter-finals in 2007-08 under Zico. The Sukru Saracoglu has hosted memorable European nights, with the passionate Kadikoy crowd creating one of Turkish football's most intimidating atmospheres. Istanbul derby matches against Galatasaray - known locally as the Intercontinental Derby due to the Bosphorus separating the two clubs' traditional territories - are among football's most intense and politically charged rivalries.
The stadium's location in Kadikoy gives it a unique urban character - Kadikoy is one of Istanbul's most cosmopolitan and progressive neighbourhoods, with a vibrant cafe culture, seafood restaurants, and a young, educated population that adds a distinctive social dimension to the Fenerbahce matchday experience. A new stadium project - the Fenerbahce Sehir Stadyumu - has been in development for many years, with plans for a modern 60,000-seat arena that would replace or supplement the Saracoglu. The current stadium, however, remains one of Turkish football's great venues, where the yellow-and-blue of Fenerbahce fills every tier and the Kadikoy atmosphere is unlike anything else in the country.
