Granada CF – Club History
Granada CF was founded in 1931 in Granada, one of Spain's most historic cities, home to the legendary Alhambra palace and set against the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada mountains in Andalusia. The club plays in red and white and has experienced one of modern Spanish football's most dramatic transformations, from lower-division obscurity to La Liga regulars and Europa League participants within a decade. The Red Cross supporters are among La Liga's most passionate, and the Los Cármenes stadium, visible from many parts of the historic city, creates a dramatic setting for Spanish top-flight football.
Granada's most celebrated modern era began with their promotion to La Liga in 2011 under the investment of Idriss Naciri, and was particularly golden between 2020 and 2021 when they qualified for the Europa League for the first time in their history. Under manager Diego Martínez, Granada reached the Europa League quarter-finals in 2021 – an extraordinary achievement for a club that had been in Spanish football's fourth division just a decade earlier.
Europa League Quarter-Finals 2021
Granada's 2020–21 Europa League run was one of the competition's great surprise stories. Defeating Napoli and Molde en route, they reached the quarter-finals before elimination by Manchester United. The experience of European football at Los Cármenes, set against the Alhambra's historic backdrop, was among European football's most aesthetically dramatic occasions and generated enormous pride across the city and region.
