Unione Sportiva Cremonese – Club History
Unione Sportiva Cremonese was founded in 1903 in Cremona, a historic city in Lombardy best known for its tradition of violin-making — home to the workshops of Stradivari and Guarneri — and for its distinctive medieval architecture. Cremonese are one of Italian football's oldest clubs, and like the city itself, their history is characterised by craftsmanship, tradition, and a connection to the cultural heritage of the Po Valley region. The club has spent most of its history in the lower tiers of Italian football, but has enjoyed several significant periods in Serie A and Serie B, including a remarkable spell in the top flight in the early 1990s that saw them competing at the highest level for consecutive seasons.
Cremonese's most celebrated era came in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when under coach Osvaldo Bagnoli they established themselves as a respected Serie A side. That period produced several talented players and memorable campaigns. After years of oscillating between the divisions, a new chapter opened in 2022 when Cremonese were promoted to Serie A for the first time in over two decades, bringing great excitement to the city. The club was able to attract several experienced players and hold its own during its top-flight return, before being relegated at the end of the 2022–23 campaign and subsequently winning promotion back to Serie A again in 2025, beginning a new era under fresh ownership ambitions.
Serie A Era & Titles
Cremonese have never won Serie A, the Coppa Italia, or a European trophy. Their greatest achievement remains their sustained presence in Serie A during the early 1990s, when they competed at the highest level for several consecutive seasons and finished as high as third place in Serie A in 1992–93 — one of the greatest achievements in the club's history and a performance that warranted European qualification. They have also won the Serie B title on several occasions, and their promotions to the top flight have always been celebrated as landmark moments for this small but proud club.
The 2022 promotion to Serie A was achieved under coach Massimiliano Alvini, and represented the culmination of sustained investment from new American ownership group Arvest Group. The club invested significantly in recruitment, including several high-profile loans and signings, as they sought to stabilise their return to the top flight. Despite relegation in 2023, the club's structure and ownership commitment remained intact, and the return to Serie A in 2025 under new manager Giovanni Stroppa demonstrated Cremonese's resilience as an institution.
Stadium
Cremonese play their home matches at the Stadio Giovanni Zini, one of the oldest football grounds in Italy still in active use at professional level. Located in central Cremona, the stadium has a capacity of approximately 16,003 and was built in 1922. The ground is named after Giovanni Zini, a local football pioneer, and has a distinctive traditional atmosphere that reflects its age and history. While modest in size and facilities compared to the major Serie A venues, the Zini is beloved by Cremonese fans for its intimate atmosphere and its connection to over a century of local football history.
Most Famous Players
Cremonese's most celebrated alumni include Faustino Asprilla, the Colombian forward who became famous for his explosive pace and flair at the club before his transfer to Parma and later Newcastle United brought him to global attention. Hernán Crespo, one of Argentina's greatest strikers, made some of his earliest appearances in professional football at Cremonese during a loan spell. Gianluigi Buffon, the legendary Italian goalkeeper, began his professional career at Parma but was closely connected to the region. Maurizio Sarri, one of Italy's most admired coaches, had an early coaching spell connected to the Cremonese area. In more recent times, David Okereke, Cyriel Dessers, and Emanuele Valeri have been key figures in the club's Serie A campaigns.
