Team History

AC Milan – Club History

AC Milan, founded in 1899 by English expatriates Herbert Kilpin and Alfred Edwards, is one of the most storied football clubs in the world. Originally called Milan Cricket and Football Club, the club adopted a red and black striped kit — colours Kilpin reportedly chose saying "we shall be a devil of a team." Based in Milan, Italy, the club quickly established itself as a powerhouse of Italian and European football. After early success, the club went through decades of development before reaching the global heights that would define it in the late 20th century.

The 1950s and 1960s brought AC Milan its first golden era under the Swedish triumvirate of Gunnar Gren, Gunnar Nordahl, and Nils Liedholm — known as the "Gre-No-Li" trio. Nordahl remains the club's all-time top scorer. Milan won multiple league titles in this period and broke through onto the European stage, winning their first European Cup in 1963 by defeating Benfica 2–1 at Wembley. A second European Cup followed in 1969 under Nereo Rocco, defeating Ajax. The club's revolutionary "Grande Milan" approach blended technical skill with tactical discipline.

Serie A Era & Titles

AC Milan is one of the most decorated clubs in Italian football history. The Rossoneri have won the Serie A title 19 times, the Coppa Italia 5 times, and the Supercoppa Italiana 7 times. Under the ownership of Silvio Berlusconi from 1986, and with legendary coach Arrigo Sacchi followed by Fabio Capello, Milan reached new heights in the late 1980s and 1990s. The "Immortals" squad of that era — featuring Marco van Basten, Frank Rijkaard, Ruud Gullit, and Carlo Ancelotti — dominated Europe with three European Cup/Champions League titles (1989, 1990, 1994). Carlo Ancelotti later managed Milan to two more Champions League titles (2003, 2007).

Full honours: Serie A – 19 titles; Coppa Italia – 5; Supercoppa Italiana – 7; UEFA Champions League/European Cup – 7; UEFA Super Cup – 5; Intercontinental Cup/FIFA Club World Cup – 3. Milan's seven Champions League titles are matched only by Real Madrid and Liverpool (jointly), making them one of the most successful clubs in European history.

Stadium

AC Milan share the iconic San Siro — officially known as the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza — with city rivals Inter Milan. Located in the San Siro district of Milan, the stadium was built in 1926 and has undergone several expansions. It currently holds approximately 75,817 spectators, making it the largest stadium in Italy. The San Siro is famous for its intimidating atmosphere, cylindrical external towers, and roof structure. European nights at the San Siro under the floodlights have produced some of football's most memorable occasions. AC Milan have regularly averaged over 60,000 attendees for home matches in their prime decades. The club has announced long-term plans for a new purpose-built stadium in the area to replace the aging San Siro.

Most Famous Players

AC Milan has produced and attracted many of football's greatest legends. Gunnar Nordahl remains the club's all-time leading scorer with 221 goals. Marco van Basten was one of the greatest strikers of all time, winning three Ballon d'Or awards while at Milan. Ruud Gullit brought flair and brilliance, while Franco Baresi is widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders in history, spending his entire career at Milan. Paolo Maldini, son of Cesare Maldini who also played for the club, became the ultimate symbol of loyalty and excellence — making over 900 appearances across 25 years and winning the Champions League twice. Kaká won the Ballon d'Or in 2007 after a devastating Champions League run. Other greats include Gianni Rivera, Zvonimir Boban, Dida, Clarence Seedorf, and Filippo Inzaghi.
