AC Milan Stadium

Stadio Giuseppe Meazza

Stadio Giuseppe Meazza

Milano, Piazzale Angelo Moratti, 20151 75,817 capacity

The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, known worldwide as San Siro, is the historic shared home of AC Milan, located at Piazzale Angelo Moratti in the San Siro district of western Milan. The stadium holds 75,817 spectators and opened in 1926, initially as Milan's exclusive ground before Inter began sharing it in 1947. Named in honour of Giuseppe Meazza, the extraordinary Italian international striker who played for both Milan clubs in the 1930s and 1940s, San Siro is one of the most recognisable stadiums on earth, characterised by its cylindrical towers, slanted roof, and imposing bulk. It is a UNESCO-listed candidate and is widely considered among the world's great football cathedrals.

AC Milan are one of the most successful clubs in European football history, having won 18 Serie A titles and 7 UEFA Champions League/European Cup trophies. The San Siro has been the stage for most of these triumphs, including the remarkable era under coach Arrigo Sacchi from 1987-91 when a squad built around the Dutch trio of Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit, and Frank Rijkaard, complemented by Italian defenders including Franco Baresi, Paolo Maldini, and Alessandro Costacurta, played some of the most technically perfect football in European history. The stadium also witnessed the Berlusconi-era Capello teams, the Kalidou Koulibaly era, and the club's modern renaissance under coach Stefano Pioli that brought the Serie A title back to Milan in 2022.

The stadium was significantly expanded in 1990 for the FIFA World Cup, with the addition of a third tier housing 11 circular towers that became architectural landmarks. That renovation brought capacity to approximately 80,000. Since then, ongoing maintenance and safety works have gradually reduced the operational capacity. AC Milan's plans for a new shared stadium with Inter have been in development for several years, with the proposed Nuovo Stadio Milano intended to replace San Siro on an adjacent site. The potential loss of San Siro would mark the end of one of football's great eras, and the debate around its future has engaged heritage bodies, politicians, and supporters across Italy.
