Team History

Birmingham City – Club History

Birmingham City Football Club was founded in 1875 as Small Heath Alliance, making it one of England's oldest professional football clubs. The club became Birmingham City in 1943, reflecting their home in the second-largest city in England. Playing in royal blue, the club has a proud working-class identity rooted in the industrial communities of the West Midlands. Birmingham City are one half of the Second City derby rivalry with Aston Villa, one of English football's fiercest and most passionately contested local contests.

Birmingham City's early history saw them among the stronger clubs in the Midlands. The club was elected to the Football League's Second Division in 1892 and has spent periods competing across the top divisions of English football. Though they have never won the First Division title, the club built a solid reputation as a well-supported, competitive outfit that could attract quality players and produce exciting football. Their St Andrew's ground became a fortress of noise and passion for generations of supporters in the east of Birmingham.

Domestic Cup Success

Birmingham City's greatest domestic achievement in the cup competitions came when they won the League Cup in 1963, defeating Aston Villa in a two-legged final to claim the club's most significant piece of silverware. Under Gil Merrick and later managers, the club competed strongly in both domestic cups. Birmingham also reached the FA Cup final in 1956, losing to Manchester City in a match remembered for goalkeeper Bert Trautmann playing through the final with a broken neck. The club's cup pedigree has provided some of their greatest moments in otherwise title-free decades.

European Football

Birmingham City's European adventures came through their Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (a precursor to the UEFA Cup) participation in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The club reached the final of the Fairs Cup on two consecutive occasions, in 1960 and 1961, losing both times to Barcelona and AS Roma respectively. These finals demonstrated Birmingham's European ambitions at a time when they were competing at the cutting edge of continental football. In more recent times, the club won the League Cup in 2011 under Alex McLeish, defeating Arsenal at Wembley, which qualified them for the UEFA Europa League.

St Andrew's Stadium

St Andrew's Trillion Trophy Stadium has been Birmingham City's home since 1906. Located in the Bordesley area of Birmingham, the ground holds approximately 29,000 supporters and sits in the shadows of the city's industrial heritage. The stadium has been redeveloped over the decades and has hosted numerous memorable matches. The atmosphere on derby days against Aston Villa is legendary, with the ground generating an intensity that has unnerved many visiting sides over the years. St Andrew's remains at the heart of Birmingham City's identity and community.

Legendary Players

Birmingham City has been home to many outstanding players. Trevor Francis became Britain's first £1 million footballer when he departed for Nottingham Forest in 1979, having been a prolific and gifted forward at St Andrew's. Bob Latchford, Jasper Carrott's favourite player, was another beloved figure of the 1970s era. Roger Hunt, Christophe Dugarry (who briefly but memorably revitalised the club in 2003), and David Sullivan-era signings like Mikael Forssell contributed to various chapters of the club's history. Goalkeeper Joe Hart made his name at Birmingham City during a loan spell from Manchester City.
