Palermo FC – Club History
Palermo Football Club was founded in 1900 in Palermo, the capital of Sicily and one of Italy's most fascinating cities. The Rosanero – pink and black – represent the proud Sicilian identity and have spent periods competing in Serie A alongside Italy's elite clubs. Palermo's history has been marked by several promotions and relegations between Serie A and Serie B, and the club's loyal Sicilian support base has maintained its passion through difficult chapters that ultimately reflect the economic and social challenges facing Sicilian football.
Palermo's most celebrated modern era came in the mid-2000s under president Maurizio Zamparini, when the club established itself as a regular Serie A competitor and qualified for the UEFA Cup. Under coach Francesco Guidolin and later Stefano Colantuono, Palermo attracted quality players including Amauri, Fabrizio Miccoli, and Edinson Cavani – who began his European career at the Renzo Barbera Stadium before his extraordinary career at Napoli, Paris Saint-Germain, and Manchester United.
Serie A and European Football
Palermo's Serie A presence from 2004 to 2013 (with brief interruptions) was the most sustained period of top-flight Italian football in the club's modern history. Their UEFA Cup campaigns in 2006-07 and 2007-08 brought continental opponents to Sicily and generated significant excitement. The discovery and early development of Edinson Cavani is probably the most significant contribution Palermo made to world football, as the Uruguayan striker developed his finishing and movement at the club before becoming one of Europe's elite goalscorers.
Renzo Barbera Stadium
Palermo play at the Renzo Barbera Stadium (formerly known as La Favorita) in Palermo, a stadium with a capacity of approximately 37,000. Built in 1932 and renovated multiple times, the ground has hosted Palermo's Serie A and European matches and also served as a venue for Italian national team fixtures. The stadium's location in the scenic city of Palermo, with the Sicilian landscape providing a beautiful backdrop, makes it one of Italian football's more atmospherically situated venues.
Legendary Players
Edinson Cavani is the most celebrated player to have developed at Palermo, leaving for Napoli in 2010 and going on to win the Ligue 1 title with PSG and European and South American trophies with Uruguay. Fabrizio Miccoli was a gifted attacking midfielder beloved by the Sicilian fans. Amauri was a Brazilian-born Italian international striker. Luca Toni, who went on to become World Cup champion with Italy, spent time at the club. More recently, players like Bruno Petkovic have been important in the club's Serie B campaigns.
