Aston Villa Football Club – Club History
Aston Villa Football Club was founded in 1874 in the Aston area of Birmingham, making it one of the oldest and most decorated clubs in English football. The club was a founding member of the Football League in 1888, and went on to win the league championship six times before the turn of the 20th century. Villa won the inaugural Football League title in 1888–89 and established themselves as one of the great powers of Victorian-era football, completing a historic Double (league and FA Cup) in 1897.
The club won the FA Cup seven times in total, including memorable victories across different eras. In 1981–82, Aston Villa reached the pinnacle of European football, winning the European Cup under manager Tony Barton, defeating Bayern Munich 1–0 in the final in Rotterdam. It remains one of the most celebrated achievements in English club football history.
Premier League Era & Titles
Aston Villa were founding members of the Premier League in 1992 and won the League Cup twice during the 1990s (1994 and 1996). The club had a period of turbulence in the mid-2010s, suffering relegation to the Championship in 2016, but returned to the Premier League in 2019 after winning the play-off final. Under the ownership of Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, and later with Unai Emery appointed as manager in 2022, Villa experienced a dramatic resurgence, finishing fourth in the Premier League in 2023–24 and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 41 years.
Villa's major honours include 7 First Division/League titles, 7 FA Cups, 5 League Cups, 1 European Cup, and 1 UEFA Super Cup (1982). They are one of only five English clubs to have won the European Cup/Champions League.
Stadium
Aston Villa play at Villa Park, their home since 1897. Located in the Aston area of Birmingham, Villa Park is one of the most iconic grounds in English football. It has hosted FA Cup semi-finals, England internationals, and Euro 1996 matches. The current capacity is approximately 42,785, making it the largest club ground in the Midlands. Average attendances have grown significantly under the club's new ownership, with the ground regularly sold out since 2022.
Most Famous Players
Aston Villa's history is filled with legendary figures. Peter Withe scored the winning goal in the 1982 European Cup final. Gary Shaw was a gifted striker of the same era. In more recent times, Paul McGrath is regarded by many as the club's greatest ever player – the Irish centre-back was majestic throughout his Villa career in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Dean Saunders and Dwight Yorke were prolific strikers, while Gareth Southgate, Ugo Ehiogu, and Dion Dublin were key figures of the Premier League era. David Platt captained the club during their League Cup successes. More recently, Jack Grealish – who came through the Villa academy – became the club's talisman before his £100 million move to Manchester City in 2021. Emiliano Martínez, Ollie Watkins, and Douglas Luiz have been central to the modern resurgence.
Key Milestones
Villa were founding members of both the Football League in 1888 and the Premier League in 1992. The 1982 European Cup victory remains the club's greatest achievement. The club has spent more seasons in the top flight than any other English club. After relegation in 2016, the 2019 play-off final victory over Derby County signalled a return to the Premier League. Villa's Champions League return in 2024–25 marked a new chapter in the club's proud history.
