Excelsior – Club History

Excelsior Rotterdam was founded on 4 July 1902 in the Kralingse Veer district of Rotterdam, making it one of the oldest football clubs in the Netherlands. The club's Latin motto, "Excelsior" — meaning "ever upward" or "higher still" — reflects an aspiration that has driven the club through more than a century of Dutch football, even as the realities of competing in Rotterdam alongside the mighty Feyenoord have kept the club firmly in the second tier of attention in their own city. Stadium

Excelsior play their home matches at the Varkenoord (also known as the Van Donge & De Roo Stadion for sponsorship reasons), a compact, characterful ground located in the Kralingse Bos area of Rotterdam. The stadium has a capacity of approximately 3,700 spectators, making it one of the smallest professional football grounds in the Netherlands. Despite — or perhaps because of — its modest size, the Varkenoord creates an exceptional atmosphere on matchdays, with supporters close to the pitch and intimately involved in the action. The ground's character is often cited as one of the most distinctive in Dutch professional football, cherished by supporters for its authenticity and warmth.

Most Famous Players

Excelsior's most notable contribution to Dutch football has been through the development of players who went on to shine at bigger clubs. Dirk Kuyt, one of the great Dutch footballers of the modern era — who starred at Feyenoord, Liverpool, and the Dutch national team — made his professional debut and early career at Excelsior before moving to Feyenoord. That single fact speaks volumes about the club's ability to identify and nurture exceptional talent. Tomáš Necid, the Czech striker, also had a spell at the club. More recently, players like Thijs Dallinga — who joined Toulouse and attracted significant transfer interest — emerged at Excelsior as a powerful striker before moving to higher-profile football.
