OH Leuven – Club History
Oud-Heverlee Leuven, commonly known as OH Leuven or OHL, is a football club based in Leuven (Louvain), the university city in Flemish Brabant, Belgium. The club was founded in 2002 through the merger of Oud-Heverlee FC and another local club. OHL has a modest history compared to Belgium's top clubs but has become particularly noteworthy in recent years due to its ownership structure and significant progress through the Belgian football pyramid.
The club attracted international attention in 2017 when King Power International – the Thai ownership group behind Premier League club Leicester City – acquired a majority stake in OH Leuven. This connection to one of English football's most famous clubs brought resources, expertise, and global exposure to the Belgian club. Under the King Power umbrella and with Leicester's support, OH Leuven won promotion to the Belgian First Division B in 2018 and then earned promotion to the Pro League in 2020, marking a significant milestone for the club.
Pro League Era & Titles
OH Leuven made their Pro League debut in the 2021–22 season and have competed in the top flight since. They have established themselves as a competitive mid-table side, using their King Power connection to attract players from Leicester's wider network as well as talented young players from their own academy. Their consistent Pro League presence represents a major achievement for a club of their relatively modest historical standing. They won the First Division B title in 2020–21 to earn promotion.
Stadium
OH Leuven play at Den Dreef Stadium, a modern and recently redeveloped ground in Leuven with a capacity of approximately 10,000. The stadium underwent significant renovation as part of the club's investment programme following the King Power takeover. Den Dreef provides good facilities in a compact, community-focused setting. Average attendances are typically 6,000–9,000 per match, with the student population of Leuven contributing to a younger and vibrant fanbase.
Most Famous Players
Given their recent rise, OH Leuven's most notable players are primarily from the modern era. The club has benefited from player exchanges and loans with Leicester City's network. Tom Vanhamel has been a reliable goalkeeper. Dejan Joveljić, Federico Ricca, and Mark McKenzie have been among notable performers. The connection to Leicester has brought several young talents to gain first-team experience in Belgium. Sébastien Dewaest and Siebe Schrijvers have also been important contributors in recent seasons.
Key Milestones
The King Power International takeover in 2017 was the transformational moment in the club's history. Promotion to the Pro League in 2021 represented the culmination of years of investment and development. The club's sustained presence in the top flight since promotion and their growing academy infrastructure are evidence of a well-managed football project. OH Leuven represents an interesting model of how strategic European ownership can rapidly elevate a club through the football pyramid.
