Sheffield United Football Club was founded in 1889, growing out of the Sheffield United Cricket Club which used the Bramall Lane ground. The club was established to make use of the cricket ground during the winter months, and rapidly developed into one of England's leading football clubs. The club returned to the Premier League for another stint in 2023–24 following their Championship success.

The 1915 final, played during World War One, was known as the "Khaki Cup Final" due to the large number of soldiers in military uniform attending the match. Jimmy Dunne was a prolific scorer in the early twentieth century, while Tony Currie was the creative midfield heartbeat of the club during the 1970s. Brian Deane scored the very first goal in Premier League history, netting for Sheffield United against Manchester United in August 1992.
