FC Groningen – Club History
FC Groningen was founded on 16 June 1971 in the city of Groningen, the capital of the northern Netherlands' Groningen province. The club emerged from a merger of two older Groningen football institutions and was designed to give the proud, independent-minded northern city a unified and professional football team capable of competing at the national level. Groningen is the largest city in the northern Netherlands and has long cultivated a distinct regional identity separate from the more densely populated western Randstad, and FC Groningen embodies that fierce northern pride with every match they play in the Eredivisie.
FC Groningen play in their characteristic green and white shirts — the colours of the province of Groningen — and their fanbase, known as "the northerners," follows the team with an intensity that belies the region's relatively modest population. The club has spent the majority of its history in the Eredivisie, with occasional relegations followed by determined promotions back to the top flight, and has produced a number of players who became significant figures in Dutch football and abroad. Their Euroborg stadium is one of the most modern grounds in the Dutch north and provides a fitting home for a club with genuine Eredivisie credentials.
Eredivisie Era & Titles
FC Groningen have never won the Eredivisie title, but they have been a persistent presence in Dutch top-flight football since the early 1970s. Their best Eredivisie season came in 2015–16 when they finished fourth and qualified for European football. The club has won the KNVB Cup twice — in 1989 and 2015 — with both triumphs representing genuine highlights in the club's history. Their 2015 cup win, defeating PEC Zwolle in the final, was celebrated enormously across the north of the Netherlands and brought European football to Groningen for the first time in years.
In European competition, FC Groningen have participated in the UEFA Cup and Europa League, with their appearances bringing a welcome international dimension to a club more accustomed to domestic consolidation. The club's strength has traditionally been in their recruitment and development of players — identifying talented young players from across the Netherlands and giving them a platform to develop before moving on to bigger clubs. This self-sustaining model has allowed FC Groningen to compete consistently in the Eredivisie despite the financial gap between themselves and the Big Three.
Stadium
FC Groningen play their home matches at the Euroborg, a modern multi-purpose stadium located in the southern part of the city of Groningen. Opened in 2006, the Euroborg has a capacity of approximately 22,500 spectators and is part of a broader leisure and retail development that has transformed the area around it. The stadium is well-regarded for its excellent facilities, good sightlines, and electric atmosphere on derby days and cup nights. Its construction marked a major step forward for the club and the city, giving Groningen a world-class facility that has helped attract players and staff who might otherwise have looked to bigger Dutch clubs.
Most Famous Players
FC Groningen have been home to a number of celebrated players over the course of their history. Arjen Robben, one of the greatest Dutch players of his generation and a Champions League winner with Bayern Munich, began his professional career at Groningen before moving to PSV and then Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Bayern. That fact alone speaks volumes about the club's ability to identify and nurture exceptional talent. Hedwiges Maduro, the Netherlands international midfielder, also came through Groningen. In the modern era, players like Alireza Jahanbakhsh — who became the first Iranian player to score in the Premier League during his time at Brighton — made their names at Groningen. Alfred Finnbogason, the Icelandic striker, was another standout figure before his move to Augsburg.
