KAA Gent – Club History

KAA Gent (Koninklijke Atletiek Associatie Gent), known as the Buffalo's, is one of Belgium's most prominent football clubs, based in the city of Ghent (Gent) in East Flanders. The club was founded in 1900, though the modern incarnation emerged from the merger of several local clubs in the 20th century. For much of their early history, Gent were a mid-table First Division club, solid but rarely challenging at the very top of Belgian football. That changed dramatically in the 2010s.

Gent's most celebrated season remains 2014–15, when they won the Belgian Pro League title for the first time in the club's history, ending a long wait and delivering extraordinary joy to the city of Ghent. The following season, as Belgian champions, Gent made their debut in the UEFA Champions League group stage, producing one of the great moments in Belgian football history when they defeated Valencia and then Zenit St Petersburg to advance to the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 – becoming the first Belgian club to reach that stage. Their run included a memorable 2–2 draw at Wolfsburg.

Pro League Era & Titles

Gent's 2014–15 Pro League title was the defining moment of the modern era for the club. They have subsequently been consistent challengers for European places and have participated in the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League on multiple occasions. Their consistent top-six finishes and regular European football have established them as one of the "Big Three" of Belgian football alongside Anderlecht and Club Brugge. The club also won the Belgian Cup in 2010 and 2022, the latter providing another trophy for the cabinet.

Stadium

Gent play at the Ghelamco Arena, which opened in 2013 and is regarded as one of the finest modern football stadiums in Belgium. Located in the Ottergem district of Ghent, the stadium has a capacity of 20,000. It was built as a replacement for the old Jules Ottenstadion and provides state-of-the-art facilities for players and spectators alike. The stadium regularly attracts near-capacity crowds for Pro League and European matches, with the passionate Buffalo support creating an excellent atmosphere. The club has had consistently strong average attendances, typically 16,000–19,000 per match.

Most Famous Players

Gent's roster of distinguished players includes several who have gone on to significant careers elsewhere. Laurent Depoitre was a prolific centre-forward who was key to the title-winning season. Sven Kums was an influential central midfielder. Thomas Foket developed as a right-back at Gent before moving to Reims and international football. In more recent times, Roman Yaremchuk became a target for top European clubs, eventually joining Benfica and then Valencia. Omri Gandelman, Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe, and Anderson Talisca are among those who have impressed in the royal blue of Gent. Jonathan David began his professional career at Gent before his prolific development at Lille, while Gianni Bruno and Hugo Cuypers have been key figures in more recent seasons.

Key Milestones

The 2014–15 Pro League title is the defining moment in KAA Gent's history. Their debut Champions League campaign in 2015–16, and specifically reaching the Round of 16, remains the greatest European achievement for a Belgian club of their stature. The opening of the Ghelamco Arena in 2013 provided the club with the infrastructure needed to compete at the highest level.
