SK Brann – Club History
SK Brann is one of Norway's most traditional and well-supported football clubs, founded on 26 September 1908 in Bergen, Norway's second-largest city on the western coast. The club's name derives from the Norwegian word for "fire", a nod to a dramatic fire that occurred in Bergen during the club's early history. Playing in red and white, Brann are Bergen's football institution and have spent the majority of their existence in the Eliteserien, Norway's top division, competing as one of the country's most decorated clubs. Their rivalry with Viking FC is one of Norwegian football's most passionate regional contests.
Brann's history in Norwegian football includes multiple Eliteserien titles and Norwegian Cup victories, with the club regularly among the contenders for domestic honours. Their Bergen roots give them a distinct west-coast identity that has always set them apart from Oslo-based clubs, and Brann's loyal, vocal support base fills Brann Stadion with colour and passion on matchdays. The club's commitment to Norwegian football development has produced many players who have gone on to represent Norway internationally.
Eliteserien Championships
Brann have won the Eliteserien (and its predecessors) on three occasions, most recently in 2007 under manager Mons Ivar Mjelde. That title was celebrated as a major achievement for western Norwegian football and confirmed the club's status as a genuine rival to Oslo's clubs. Their Norwegian Cup victories add further silverware to the cabinet, and Brann have been consistent European participants, competing in UEFA Cup and Europa League qualifying rounds on multiple occasions. The club's sustained investment in youth development has maintained their competitive position within Norwegian football.
Brann Stadion
Brann play at Brann Stadion in Bergen, a stadium that holds approximately 17,700 supporters and provides a fantastic backdrop against Bergen's dramatic fjord landscape. The stadium has been progressively modernised and provides one of Norwegian football's best matchday experiences. On evenings when Brann are in European competition or challenging for the Eliteserien title, the stadium generates exceptional atmosphere. Bergen's passionate football culture means that Brann Stadion is consistently one of the best-attended grounds in Norwegian football.
Legendary Players
Brann has developed and attracted many respected Norwegian footballers. Mons Ivar Mjelde was both a player and the championship-winning manager of 2007. Bjørn Maars Johnsen was a productive striker in more recent campaigns. Erik Huseklepp emerged from Brann and had a career that included international caps. Eirik Bakke was a highly regarded midfielder who played in the Champions League with Leeds United after leaving Brann. Goalkeeper Øystein Rønning gave long service, while Daniel Braaten and Jostein Flo were important attackers across different eras at the club.
