Team History

BK Häcken – Club History

BK Häcken was founded in 1940 in the Hisingen district of Gothenburg, Sweden's second-largest city. Playing in yellow and black, Häcken are one of Gothenburg's four football clubs and have risen remarkably from a modest local club to consistent Allsvenskan competitors and European participants. The club's identity reflects the working-class industrial character of Hisingen, Gothenburg's largest island, and they draw passionate support from communities on the north side of the Göta River. Häcken's progressive approach to player development and football philosophy has been recognised across Sweden and internationally.

BK Häcken's most significant period of growth came in the 2010s and 2020s, as the club invested in infrastructure, youth development, and quality recruitment. Under various coaches, Häcken rose to become regular top-three Allsvenskan contenders and earned their first Allsvenskan championship in 2022. The club's modern approach to football, emphasising technical quality and progressive play, has attracted players from across Europe and helped them compete in Europa League and Conference League qualifying rounds with credit.

Allsvenskan Championship

BK Häcken won their first Allsvenskan championship in 2022, ending long-standing ambitions for the club and generating enormous celebration in the Hisingen community. The title was achieved under manager Per-Mathias Høgmo with a squad combining experienced Swedish players and quality international recruits. European competition followed, with Häcken competing in UEFA qualifying rounds and demonstrating their quality against continental opposition. This championship confirmed Häcken's transformation from provincial also-rans to genuine Swedish football champions.

Bravida Arena

BK Häcken play at the Bravida Arena in Gothenburg's Hisingen area, a stadium that holds approximately 6,500 supporters. The compact venue creates an intense atmosphere and reflects the club's community roots, despite Häcken's growing ambitions. For major European matches and championship-deciding encounters, the club has also used Gothenburg's larger Gamla Ullevi stadium. The community connection to Hisingen that the Bravida Arena provides remains important to the club's identity as they have grown into a major Swedish football force.
