RSC Anderlecht – Club History
RSC Anderlecht (Royale Sporting Club Anderlecht) is the most successful football club in Belgian history and one of the most recognisable clubs in continental Europe. Founded in 1908 in the Brussels municipality of Anderlecht, the club grew from a modest local side into the dominant force in Belgian football. Anderlecht joined the Belgian First Division in 1935 and won their first league title in 1947. Since then, they have accumulated more Belgian league championships than any other club.
Anderlecht's European pedigree is remarkable for a club of their size. They won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1976 and 1978, defeating West Ham United and Austria Vienna respectively. They also reached the UEFA Cup final in 1984, losing to Tottenham Hotspur on penalties in a contest later marred by a bribery scandal involving the referee. In 1983, they reached the UEFA Super Cup final. Their 1976 and 1978 Cup Winners' Cup triumphs established Anderlecht as one of Europe's elite clubs in that era.
Pro League Era & Titles
Anderlecht are the undisputed kings of Belgian football, with 35 Belgian First Division/Pro League titles to their name (as of 2024), making them by far the most decorated club in the country. They have won the Belgian Cup 10 times and have been consistently competitive in European football. In recent seasons, under coaches such as Felice Mazzù, Brian Riemer, and others, the club has undergone significant squad rebuilding. They have been competitive in the Pro League playoffs, though the emergence of Club Brugge and Union Saint-Gilloise as rivals has created a more competitive top-flight environment. Their most recent title came in 2021–22.
Stadium
Anderlecht play at Lotto Park (formerly the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium), located in Anderlecht, Brussels. The stadium has a capacity of 21,500 and is one of the best facilities in Belgian football. Named after the former club president Constant Vanden Stock, it was renamed Lotto Park in 2013 following a sponsorship deal. Anderlecht regularly sell out the stadium for major matches, with the passionate purple-and-white support creating an intense atmosphere. Average attendances are consistently among the highest in Belgium, typically around 17,000–20,000 per match.
Most Famous Players
Anderlecht have developed and attracted some of Belgian football's greatest talents. Paul Van Himst is considered the greatest Belgian footballer of his era and one of the finest European players of the 1960s and early 70s, spending his entire career at Anderlecht. Enzo Scifo was a technically gifted Belgian international of the 1980s. Luc Nilis was a prolific striker of the 1990s. Jan Mulder was a cult hero. In more recent times, Vincent Kompany – who returned as player-manager before moving to manage Burnley and then Bayern Munich – is one of Belgium's greatest-ever players. Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard (who joined from Anderlecht's youth academy), Youri Tielemans, and Leandro Trossard all came through or played for Anderlecht before becoming stars at top European clubs. Loïc Nottet, Adrien Trebel, and more recently Lior Refaelov and Benito Raman have been prominent figures.
Key Milestones
Anderlecht's consecutive UEFA Cup Winners' Cup triumphs in 1976 and 1978 are the pinnacle of the club's European achievements. Their record 35 Belgian league titles dwarf any rival. The return of Vincent Kompany as player-manager in 2020 brought renewed excitement, and his success in leading the club to the title in 2022 before his departure for Burnley was a milestone moment. The club's youth academy has been one of Europe's most productive, contributing to Belgium's golden generation of the 2010s–2020s.
