Unione Sportiva Sassuolo Calcio was founded in 1922 in Sassuolo, a small town in the province of Modena in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. For the majority of its existence, Sassuolo was a minor club languishing in the lower tiers of Italian football, with no realistic expectation of ever competing at the highest level. The club's extraordinary transformation in the 2010s, facilitated by the backing of the Mapei Corporation — one of Italy's largest industrial companies — is one of the most remarkable stories in modern Serie A history, taking a club from obscurity to regular European football in under a decade.

Sassuolo's rise began after Mapei took over the club in 1994 and began a long-term investment programme that gradually moved the club through the Italian football pyramid. Promotion to Serie A was achieved for the first time in 2013, and the club never looked back. Under coach Eusebio Di Francesco and later Roberto De Zerbi, Sassuolo developed a reputation for progressive, attacking football that attracted admiration across Europe. De Zerbi's tenure in particular — characterised by high-tempo pressing, bold possession football, and development of young players — brought Sassuolo's philosophy to global attention and launched his own career as one of Europe's most respected coaches. Serie A Era & Titles

Sassuolo have never won Serie A, the Coppa Italia, or a European trophy. Their greatest seasons came between 2016 and 2022, when they qualified for European competition several times, competing in the UEFA Europa League. The 2015–16 season was their finest, finishing sixth in Serie A and qualifying for Europe. Their record points tally in Serie A is 63 points (2015–16), and their highest league finish was sixth place. Sassuolo have been a model for smart recruitment and tactical innovation on a relatively modest budget, regularly competing above their financial weight.

The club's return to Serie B in 2024 came as a shock after over a decade in the top flight, but their promotion back to Serie A in 2025 demonstrated the resilience and structural solidity of the project. Stadium

Sassuolo play their home matches at the Mapei Stadium – Città del Tricolore, located in Reggio Emilia. The stadium, with a capacity of approximately 21,525, is one of the most modern football-specific venues in Italy, purpose-built for football and widely regarded as one of the finest match-day experiences in Serie A. Opened in 1995 and renovated several times since, the stadium was also used by the Italian national team for UEFA Nations League and international friendly matches. The name Mapei Stadium reflects the club's owner, and its facilities are considered among the best in the country for a club of Sassuolo's size.

Most Famous Players

Domenico Berardi is without question Sassuolo's most celebrated player — a winger of exceptional quality who spent his entire professional career at the club, winning over 20 international caps for Italy and scoring more than 130 Serie A goals in black and green. Berardi became a symbol of the club's ambition and one-club loyalty. Manuel Locatelli, a midfield player developed at Sassuolo, became a mainstay of the Italian national team and won the UEFA Euro 2020 title before being sold to Juventus. Gianluca Raspadori, similarly developed at Sassuolo, moved to Napoli and contributed to Italy's national team. Francesco Caputo was the club's most reliable striker for several seasons. Pedro Obiang, Mert Müldür, and Maxime Lopez were key figures during the European qualification years.
