Team History

AIK – Club History

AIK (Allmänna Idrottsklubben) is one of Sweden's oldest and most decorated sports clubs, founded in 1891 in Stockholm. The football section, which became the club's flagship, has accumulated the most Allsvenskan titles of any Stockholm-based club and established AIK as one of the leading forces in Swedish football. Playing in black and yellow – known as "gult och svart" – AIK have a fiercely devoted following and represent the capital in one of Swedish football's most passionate city rivalries. The club's broader sporting identity encompasses multiple disciplines, but football is the jewel in AIK's crown.

AIK's early football history was competitive from the outset. The club won Swedish football's top division for the first time in 1900, making them one of the inaugural champions of organised Swedish football. Over the following decades, AIK built a record of consistent achievement, with championships in multiple eras reflecting the club's ability to adapt, develop talent, and remain competitive through changing eras of football. Their black and yellow colours became synonymous with competitive Swedish football and are instantly recognisable to fans across the Nordic region.

Allsvenskan Record

AIK have won the Allsvenskan on 12 occasions, with titles spread across multiple decades. Their most celebrated modern period came in the late 1990s and early 2000s, when the club won back-to-back championships and qualified for UEFA competition. The 1999 Allsvenskan title was particularly meaningful as it marked a resurgence for the club under excellent coaching and with a squad containing some of the finest Swedish players of the generation. AIK's consistency across over a century of competition reflects an institutional approach that values stability, identity, and the development of local and Swedish talent.

European Football

AIK have competed in European competition on numerous occasions, qualifying for the UEFA Cup and later Europa League through their domestic success. Their Champions League qualifying round appearances have brought memorable nights against European opponents. The club's European record, while not matching the sustained success of some Scandinavian rivals, has demonstrated their competitiveness and helped develop players who went on to strong careers across Europe. AIK's European involvement has always been viewed as a learning experience that feeds into their domestic ambitions.

Friends Arena

AIK play their home matches at Friends Arena in Solna, Stockholm, one of Scandinavia's largest and most modern stadiums. The arena, which opened in 2012, holds approximately 50,000 supporters and also serves as the home ground for the Swedish national team. Its state-of-the-art facilities, retractable roof, and multi-purpose design make it one of the premier venues in northern Europe. The stadium is located adjacent to the Råsunda Stadion site, AIK's former home, and represents a dramatic upgrade in facilities. Before the move, AIK had played at Råsunda since 1937, a stadium steeped in the history of Swedish football.

Legendary Players

AIK has produced and attracted many outstanding Swedish footballers. Gunnar Nordahl, one of Sweden's greatest strikers of all time, played for AIK before becoming a legend at AC Milan and with the Swedish national team. Sebastián Svard was a creative midfielder who embodied AIK's modern playing identity. More recently, Goalkeeper Patrik Carlgren, midfielder Nils-Eric Johansson, and forwards including Henok Goitom – who became one of the most beloved players in the club's modern history with his goals and commitment – have been fan favourites. Swedish internationals Robin Quaison and Jordan Larsson have also had associations with the club.
