The Kassam Stadium
Oxford United FC plays at the Kassam Stadium, located in the Littlemore area of Oxford, England's famous university city. With a capacity of approximately 12,500 spectators (only three sides completed, with one end open), the Kassam Stadium opened in 2001 following the club's move from the Manor Ground which had served them since 1925. Named after the stadium's developer Firoz Kassam, the ground has long been controversial among Oxford United supporters due to the club's long-term lease arrangement and the absence of a fourth stand, which many fans see as a constraint on the club's development and ambitions.
Oxford United's presence in the Championship is a significant achievement for a club that spent much of the 2000s and 2010s in the lower divisions of English football. The club's history includes a celebrated period in the mid-1980s under Robert Maxwell's ownership when Oxford won the old Third Division, Second Division, and the Football League Cup in 1986 — defeating Queens Park Rangers 3–0 at Wembley — in an extraordinary period of achievement. Those honours and the Manor Ground era are the source of much of the club's historical identity, while the Kassam Stadium has been the venue for the more recent journey back up the football pyramid.
The three-sided Kassam Stadium remains one of English football's more unusual grounds, and the club's aspirations to either complete the fourth stand or move to an entirely new venue have been discussed periodically without resolution. Oxford United's American ownership has brought ambition and investment, and the club's Championship participation has created pressure to address the stadium's limitations. Despite its constraints, the Kassam Stadium has hosted Championship football with a committed fanbase that has maintained support through the club's various adventures in the lower divisions. The city of Oxford — world-renowned for its university but not historically prominent in football — has welcomed the club's Championship presence with enthusiasm.
