St. Johnstone FC – Club History
St. Johnstone Football Club was founded in 1884 in Perth, Scotland's historic "Fair City" on the banks of the River Tay. The Saints, as they are known, are one of Scotland's more established professional clubs and have spent much of their recent history competing in the Scottish Premiership. Playing in blue and white, St. Johnstone have carved out a distinctive identity as an efficient, well-run provincial Scottish club that has achieved remarkable silverware against all expectations, becoming in 2021 the only Scottish club to hold both the Scottish Cup and League Cup simultaneously.
St. Johnstone's early history was spent largely in the lower divisions of Scottish football. The club moved to their McDiarmid Park home in 1989, one of Scottish football's first modern all-seater stadiums, and this forward-thinking investment was a statement of ambition. Under manager Tommy Wright, whose tenure from 2013 to 2021 was transformative, St. Johnstone developed into a consistent Scottish Premiership force, competing for European places and demonstrating the coaching quality that can maximise resources to extraordinary effect.
Historic Cup Double of 2021
St. Johnstone made history in 2021 under manager Callum Davidson by becoming the only team in Scottish football history to win both the Scottish Cup and League Cup in the same season. Their Scottish Cup victory over Hibernian and League Cup victory over Livingston were both achieved against the odds, with a squad of professionals who maximised their collective abilities to produce one of Scottish football's most remarkable achievements. Davidson's coaching brilliance was widely recognised, and the double transformed St. Johnstone's standing in Scottish football permanently.
European Football
St. Johnstone have competed in European competition on multiple occasions, qualifying through cup victories and strong league finishes. Their Europa League and Europa Conference League campaigns have brought continental opposition to Perth and given the club's supporters memorable European nights. In 2021–22, St. Johnstone competed in the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds, demonstrating the club's ability to represent Scottish football on the continental stage. These European appearances have been celebrated with enormous pride across the Perth community.
McDiarmid Park
St. Johnstone have played at McDiarmid Park since 1989, when the club moved from Muirton Park. The ground holds approximately 10,600 supporters and was one of Scotland's first purpose-built, all-seater football stadiums, built ahead of the Taylor Report requirements that would transform English and Scottish football. Located on the western edge of Perth, the stadium provides a comfortable, modern environment for Scottish Premiership football. On big cup occasions and European nights, McDiarmid Park generates a genuinely intense atmosphere that belies the stadium's relatively modest capacity.
Legendary Players
St. Johnstone's most celebrated players have come primarily from their recent successful era. Callum Davidson, the 2021 cup double-winning manager, was himself a former player who understood the club deeply. Goalkeeper Zander Clark has been outstanding in both domestic and European competition. David Wotherspoon has been a creative, versatile attacking midfielder who has given long and excellent service. Liam Craig was a reliable midfield captain of multiple successful campaigns. Michael O'Halloran and Murray Davidson contributed important performances. Manager Tommy Wright's eight-year tenure was the foundation for the subsequent unprecedented double success.
