Fir Park
Motherwell FC plays at Fir Park, located in Motherwell, a town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, approximately 13 miles southeast of Glasgow. The stadium has a capacity of 13,742 spectators and has served as Motherwell's home since 1895, making it one of Scotland's longest-established club grounds. Fir Park's Main Stand dates back to the early twentieth century and was designed by Archibald Leitch — the same architect responsible for Ibrox Stadium and numerous other British football grounds — giving it a distinctive historical character. The ground sits in a tight urban setting surrounded by residential streets, creating the compact, community-embedded atmosphere that characterises many traditional Scottish football venues.
Fir Park has witnessed Motherwell's finest hours, including the club's Scottish top-flight championship win in 1931–32 and Scottish Cup victories in 1952 and 1991. The 1991 Scottish Cup triumph — achieved with a famous team featuring Tommy McLean as manager — saw Fir Park filled with jubilant celebrations and remains one of the most celebrated moments in the club's history. Motherwell have also represented Scotland in European competition on multiple occasions, with Fir Park hosting UEFA ties against clubs from across the continent. The stadium's intimate scale creates a strong home advantage and generates passionate support from the Motherwell faithful.
Fir Park has undergone various renovation and improvement works over the years to maintain its standards as a Scottish Premiership venue. The club operates under a community model of ownership — Motherwell became the first community-owned major football club in Scotland in 2016 — and this structure has brought renewed energy to the development of both the club and its stadium. The Leitch Main Stand, which is a listed building, requires careful maintenance and presents specific challenges for any significant redevelopment. Fir Park remains a much-loved and historically rich football ground, central to the identity of Motherwell and the wider North Lanarkshire footballing community.
