Viking FK – Club History
Viking FK was founded in 1899 in Stavanger, a city on Norway's southwestern coast that became one of the country's most prosperous following the discovery of North Sea oil in the 1970s. Playing in blue and white stripes, Viking are one of Norway's most successful and well-supported football clubs, winning the Eliteserien on eight occasions and the Norwegian Cup on five times. The club's identity reflects the oil-rich, cosmopolitan character of Stavanger, and their fierce rivalry with Brann from nearby Bergen is one of Norwegian football's most passionately contested regional contests.
Viking's golden era came in the late 1960s and 1970s, when the club won multiple Norwegian championships and established themselves as one of Scandinavia's stronger clubs. They competed in European competition throughout this period, facing clubs from across the continent in the UEFA Cup and European Cup competitions. The club's oil-era Stavanger backing gave them financial resources unusual for Norwegian clubs of the time, and this stability underpinned multiple championship campaigns across different decades.
Eliteserien Championships
Viking's eight Eliteserien titles place them among Norway's most decorated clubs. Their championship wins in 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1979, 1982, 1991, and 2022 span multiple eras and demonstrate sustained competitiveness across five decades. Their 2022 title – their first in 31 years – was celebrated with enormous joy in Stavanger and confirmed that Viking had returned to the elite of Norwegian football after a prolonged period without championship glory. The title was achieved under manager Bjarne Berntsen with a squad combining experienced Norwegian players and quality international additions.
Viking Stadion
Viking FK play at the Viking Stadion in Stavanger, a modern facility that holds approximately 16,600 supporters. The stadium has been progressively developed and provides excellent facilities for Norwegian top-flight and European football. Located in the heart of Stavanger, the ground creates good atmosphere on big occasions. European nights and Eliteserien title deciders have generated some of Norwegian football's most memorable atmospheres at Viking Stadion, with the local community demonstrating the deep pride they have in their club's European pedigree and history.
Legendary Players
Viking has developed many respected Norwegian players. Tom Lund was a long-serving midfielder of the championship era. More recently, Bjørn Johnsen was a productive striker. Captain Zlatko Tripić has been a creative force in the modern era. Alexander Søderlund was a powerful striker before his career progressed. In the 2022 title-winning squad, players like Sondre Bjørshol and Veton Berisha were important contributors. Viking has also attracted Norwegian internationals throughout its history, reflecting the club's status as one of the country's elite destinations for Norwegian talent.
