Royal Antwerp FC – Club History

Royal Antwerp FC, officially Koninklijke Football Club Antwerpen, holds the distinction of being the oldest football club in Belgium, founded in 1880. Based in the city of Antwerp (Antwerpen), the club was a founding member of the Belgian Football Association and played in the first editions of the Belgian First Division. Antwerp won the Belgian First Division title in 1929 and the Belgian Cup in 1955 and 1992. The club's storied history as Belgium's oldest club gives them a unique place in the country's football heritage.

Antwerp experienced a long period of decline and instability after their early successes, spending many years outside the top flight. A pivotal moment came in 2017 when Marc Coucke, and later Paul Gheysens, invested heavily in the club. Under the management of Laszlo Bölöni and then Brian Priske, Antwerp made a rapid return to relevance, winning the Belgian Cup in 2020 and then the Belgian Pro League title in 2023 – their first championship in 66 years. This achievement was celebrated as one of the great moments in Belgian football's recent history.

Pro League Era & Titles

Antwerp returned to the Belgian First Division in 2017 and quickly established themselves as a top-six club. Their 2022–23 Pro League title under Mark van Bommel was the defining achievement of the modern era. They also won the Belgian Cup in 2020, ending a 28-year wait for silverware. The club qualified for the UEFA Europa League and Europa Conference League in recent seasons, giving their passionate fanbase European nights for the first time in decades. Their Belgian Cup win in 2020 was the springboard for the sustained success that followed.

Stadium

Antwerp play at the Bosuilstadion (also known as Bosuil Stadium), their traditional home in Deurne, Antwerp. The stadium has a capacity of approximately 16,975. It is one of the most atmospheric venues in Belgian football, with the fanatical Antwerp support – known for their loyalty and passion – creating an intense atmosphere. The club has been investing in stadium improvements to enhance facilities while preserving the ground's historic character. Average attendances are typically close to capacity for major matches.

Most Famous Players

Antwerp's history spans over 140 years and includes many notable players. In the early era, Louis Verbeeck and other pioneers helped establish the club. In the modern revival, Lior Refaelov was a creative and beloved attacking midfielder who played a key role in the cup win in 2020. Didier Lamkel Zé was a controversial but exciting winger. Dieumerci Mbokani was a powerful striker who contributed to the club's recent rise. Vincent Janssen joined from Tottenham and helped add quality. In their title-winning 2022–23 season, Toby Alderweireld – the legendary Belgian international defender – made a high-profile return to Belgian football to play for the club of his heart, while Michael Frey, Arthur Vermeeren (before his move to Atletico Madrid), and Jurgen Ekkelenkamp were key performers.

Key Milestones

Antwerp's status as Belgium's oldest football club is a source of immense pride. Their 2023 Pro League title – the first in 66 years – is the defining moment of the modern era. The Belgian Cup win in 2020 represented the first significant trophy in nearly three decades. The arrival of Toby Alderweireld as a player and later in a broader club role symbolised the ambition of the modern project. Antwerp's return to consistent European competition in the 2020s represents a genuine revival of one of football's historic institutions.
