SK Sturm Graz – Club History
SK Sturm Graz is one of Austria's most decorated football clubs, founded on 1 May 1909 in Graz, Austria's second-largest city in the southern Styria region. Playing in black and white, the "Schwoazn" (Black Ones in Styrian dialect) have won the Austrian Bundesliga on three occasions and been consistent participants in European competition. Graz has a passionate football culture, and Sturm's rivalry with city neighbours Grazer AK is one of Austrian football's most intense local derbies, dividing the Styrian capital between two clubs with very different identities.
Sturm Graz's finest era came at the turn of the millennium, when they won back-to-back Austrian Bundesliga titles in 1998 and 1999 under legendary coach Hannes Kartnig. This period also saw the club's most successful European campaigns, reaching the UEFA Champions League group stage in both 2000–01 and 2001–02. These seasons brought Sturm Graz to the attention of European football, as the Austrian champions competed with distinction against clubs including Manchester United, Valencia, and Bayern Munich. The experience of Champions League football transformed the club's profile and ambitions.
Austrian Championship and European Football
Sturm's three Austrian Bundesliga titles – in 1998, 1999, and 2011 – represent the peaks of their domestic achievement. Their Champions League group stage appearances in 2000 and 2001 included remarkable results, including beating Liverpool and Celtic in group matches. These results demonstrated the quality of Sturm Graz's squad during their finest era and gave Austrian football some of its most celebrated European moments. The 2011 title under manager Franco Foda came after an extended wait and was celebrated with enormous joy across Graz.
Merkur Arena
Sturm Graz play at the Merkur Arena (also known as Stadion Graz-Liebenau) in the Liebenau district of Graz. The stadium holds approximately 16,000 supporters and has been the club's home since 1997, replacing their older ground. The arena has hosted Austrian Bundesliga matches, Europa League fixtures, and European nights that brought continental opponents to Styria. The passionate Sturm Graz support fills the arena on derby days and European occasions, creating one of Austrian football's more atmospheric venues.
Legendary Players
Sturm Graz has produced and attracted many respected Austrian and international players. Mario Haas was a prolific Austrian striker who gave long, excellent service to the club and became a genuine fan favourite. Günter Neukirchner was a quality midfielder of the successful era. In the Champions League years, players like Markus Schopp, Gilbert Prilasnig, and goalkeeper Günter Pentz were important figures. More recently, Austrian internationals like Thorsten Schick and Jakob Jantscher have been key contributors. Manager Christian Ilzer has guided the club to consistent Bundesliga competition and Europa League participation in the modern era.
