HNK Rijeka – Club History
HNK Rijeka is Croatia's third-most successful football club and the pride of the Kvarner coast, founded in 1946 in the port city of Rijeka (historically known as Fiume). The club plays in white with a blue diagonal sash – an homage to the flag of the Kvarner region – and has built a passionate identity in a city with a complex history of Italian and Croatian heritage. Rijeka's rivalry with Hajduk Split and Dinamo Zagreb is central to Croatian football, and the Kvarner Bijeli (White Ones) have consistently challenged the Zagreb-Split duopoly that has historically dominated Croatian domestic football.
Rijeka's most celebrated domestic achievement came in the 2016–17 season, when they won their first Croatian First Football League championship, ending the long dominance of Dinamo Zagreb and Hajduk Split. The title was achieved under manager Matjaž Kek and celebrated with extraordinary joy across the Kvarner region. This breakthrough was long overdue for a club that had been competitive for decades without achieving the ultimate domestic prize, and it established Rijeka as a genuine three-way force in Croatian football.
Croatian Football Championship
Rijeka's 2017 championship remains their only HNL title, but the club has been a consistent top-three finisher in Croatian football for many years. Their Croatian Cup victories and regular European participation have supplemented the domestic record and established Rijeka as a club of European experience. The club's ability to qualify for the UEFA Europa League group stage has demonstrated their quality and given the Kvarner region memorable European nights at the Rujevica stadium.
European Football
Rijeka's European adventures have included multiple UEFA Cup and Europa League campaigns. As Croatian champions in 2017, they participated in the Champions League qualifying rounds before falling to eventual finalists Juventus. Their Europa League group stage appearances have brought prestigious opponents to Rijeka and given the club international recognition. In 2017–18, Rijeka competed in the Europa League group stage, facing AC Milan and Olympiakos, demonstrating Croatian football's ability to compete at the European level.
HNK Rijeka Stadion
Rijeka play at their Rujevica stadium, a modern facility opened in 2016 with a capacity of approximately 8,500 supporters. The purpose-built ground replaced their older facility and provides excellent facilities for Croatian top-flight and European football. Located in the Rujevica area of Rijeka, the stadium reflects the club's ambitions and has hosted memorable Champions League and Europa League qualifying matches. The Armada – Rijeka's ultra supporter group – creates an intense and colourful atmosphere that makes Rijeka's home matches among the most atmospheric in Croatian football.
Legendary Players
Rijeka has produced and attracted many respected Croatian and international players. Andrej Kramarić, one of Croatia's finest modern strikers, began his professional career at Rijeka before moving to Leicester City and Hoffenheim, earning Champions League and World Cup medals with Croatia. Matija Škarabot was a reliable goalkeeper. Ivan Tomečak gave long and loyal service. In the championship-winning era, players like Marin Tomasov and Anas Sharbini were important contributors. Marko Lešković was a commanding defender. Manager Matjaž Kek, a Slovenian coach, guided Rijeka to their historic title win and later became the Slovenia national team coach.
