Galatasaray Spor Kulübü was founded on 1 October 1905 in Istanbul, Turkey, by Ali Sami Yen, a student at Galatasaray High School. The club bears the name of the prestigious educational institution where it was founded, and from its earliest days Galatasaray has been associated with Istanbul's educated, cosmopolitan elite — a character that has given the club a distinct identity separate from their cross-city rivals Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş. Süper Lig Era & Titles

Galatasaray are the most successful club in the history of the Turkish Süper Lig, having won the championship 24 times — placing them ahead of arch-rivals Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş. Their periods of greatest dominance include a consecutive four-title run from 1997 to 2000 under Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu, a stretch that also produced their European glory. More recently, Galatasaray won back-to-back Süper Lig titles in 2022–23 and 2023–24 under coach Okan Buruk, asserting their position as Turkish football's dominant force once more after a period of relative Fenerbahçe dominance.

Beyond the league, Galatasaray have won the Turkish Cup 18 times. Their greatest moments on the European stage came in 1999–2000 when they defeated Arsenal on penalties to win the UEFA Cup, then defeated Real Madrid on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup just months later — a double European triumph that remains the pinnacle of Turkish football's international achievement. In the Champions League, Galatasaray have reached the quarter-finals and consistently qualified for the group stage, bringing marquee players to Istanbul and delivering memorable nights against Europe's elite.

Stadium

Galatasaray play their home matches at the Rams Park (previously known as Nef Stadyumu and before that as Türk Telekom Stadium), a modern stadium located in the Seyrantepe district on the European side of Istanbul. Opened in January 2011, the stadium has a capacity of approximately 52,000 spectators and is widely regarded as one of the finest football arenas in Turkey and the broader region. The stadium's design — compact, steep, and almost entirely enclosed — creates an extraordinary atmosphere on European nights and in the Istanbul derby, when the noise levels are among the highest recorded in European football. The Rams Park replaced the old Ali Sami Yen Stadium where Galatasaray had played since 1964.

Galatasaray's history includes a remarkable collection of legendary players from Turkey and beyond. Metin Oktay, the prolific striker of the 1950s and 1960s, is widely regarded as the greatest player in the club's history and one of the finest footballers Turkey has ever produced. Hakan Şükür — Turkey's all-time leading goalscorer and the man who scored the fastest goal in World Cup history (2002) — is another club icon. The 2000 era was defined by foreign stars including Gheorghe Hagi (Romania's greatest player), Hakan Unsal, and goalkeeper Claudio Taffarel. Didier Drogba had a brief but celebrated spell at the club, as did Wesley Sneijder and Radamel Falcao — all attracted by the Champions League football and the unique atmosphere of Galatasaray.
