FC St. Gallen – Club History
FC St. Gallen was founded on 17 April 1879 in St. Gallen, a city in northeastern Switzerland, making it the oldest football club in Switzerland and one of the oldest in continental Europe. This remarkable historical significance is a source of enormous pride for the club and the city. Playing in green and white, FC St. Gallen represent the Ostschweiz (eastern Switzerland) region and have built a history that spans over 145 years of football, from the sport's earliest days in Central Europe to consistent modern Super League competition.
As Switzerland's oldest football club, St. Gallen's history predates organised Swiss league football by decades. The club participated in the formation of Swiss football institutions and won the Swiss championship twice, in 1904 and 2000. The 2000 title – under coach Marcel Koller who later managed the Swiss and Austrian national teams – was a celebrated modern achievement that ended a century of near-misses and qualified the club for the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds. St. Gallen's Kybunpark stadium provides a modern home for the historic institution.
Swiss Super League Championship
St. Gallen's 2000 championship was their most celebrated modern achievement, qualifying them for the Champions League qualifying rounds and generating enormous celebration across the Ostschweiz region. The squad under Marcel Koller contained quality Swiss and international players who combined well to win the title from FC Basel and Grasshopper. Their most recent Super League campaigns have seen St. Gallen challenge consistently for European places, with fourth and fifth-place finishes in recent seasons reflecting their sustained competitiveness.
Kybunpark
FC St. Gallen play at the Kybunpark in St. Gallen, a modern stadium opened in 2008 with a capacity of approximately 20,000 supporters. The ground replaced the historic Espenmoos stadium, which had been the club's home for many decades. Kybunpark provides state-of-the-art facilities for Swiss Super League and European football, and its atmosphere on big occasions reflects the passionate support that St. Gallen's fans – known as the Espen – have maintained throughout the club's long history. The green-and-white colours create a distinctive visual spectacle in the stadium.
Legendary Players
FC St. Gallen has produced and attracted many respected Swiss players across their long history. In the 2000 championship era, striker Stéphane Chapuisat – a European Cup winner with Borussia Dortmund and one of Switzerland's greatest-ever players – played for St. Gallen in the later stages of his career. Goalkeeper Fabio Coltorti gave long service. In the modern era, players like Victor Ruiz and Jordi Quintillà have been important contributors. Manager Peter Zeidler has guided the club to consistent Super League competition in the modern era with an attacking, progressive philosophy.
