Kybunpark
FC St. Gallen plays at the kybunpark, a modern, distinctive stadium located in St. Gallen, the largest city in eastern Switzerland and the capital of the canton of St. Gallen. Opened in 2008 with a capacity of 19,694 spectators, the stadium replaced the old Espenmoos ground that had served the club since 1905. The kybunpark — named after a Swiss shoe insole company — features an innovative elliptical design with a continuous roof and four stands that create an entirely enclosed bowl, generating excellent atmosphere. The stadium is widely regarded as one of the finest football venues in Switzerland and has hosted Swiss national team matches.
FC St. Gallen is the oldest professional football club in Switzerland, founded in 1879, and one of the country's most historically significant clubs. The club has won the Swiss Super League twice (1904 and 2000), with their 2000 championship celebrated enormously in eastern Switzerland. FC St. Gallen participated in the UEFA Champions League in the 2000–01 season following their title, competing against Valencia, Manchester United, and PSV Eindhoven in the group stage — an extraordinary occasion for a club from one of Switzerland's more provincial cities. More recently, the club has been a consistent Super League presence and regular Europa League participant.
The kybunpark's innovative design and compact, fully enclosed structure create one of Swiss football's finest atmospheres, and the stadium regularly hosts significant matches for the club and for Swiss football. St. Gallen's position as the main city of eastern Switzerland — close to the Austrian and German borders and near the famous Abbey of St. Gallen with its UNESCO World Heritage library — gives the club a distinctive regional identity. FC St. Gallen's passionate supporter base, which produces some of Swiss football's most vocal matchday atmospheres, makes the kybunpark one of the Super League's most intimidating home venues.
