Istanbul Başakşehir FK – Club History
Istanbul Başakşehir FK was founded in 1990 as a municipal sports club of the Istanbul Greater City Municipality, originally called İstanbul BB (İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor). The club was associated with Mayor Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's municipal administration before becoming a standalone professional entity. Playing in orange and dark blue, Başakşehir represent the newer, western suburbs of Istanbul and won their first and only Turkish Süper Lig title in 2019–20 – a controversial championship that many Turkish football supporters attributed to political influence rather than purely sporting merit.
Başakşehir's rise to the Süper Lig title came after years of consistent investment and the development of a competitive squad under director of football Mithat Yenigün and coaches including Aykut Kocaman and Okan Buruk. The club reached the UEFA Champions League group stage in 2020–21 – the first occasion a Turkish club outside the Istanbul trio had qualified for the group stage – competing against Manchester United, PSG, and Leipzig. This achievement, regardless of the controversy surrounding the club's ownership history, was a genuine footballing milestone.
Champions League Group Stage
Başakşehir's 2020–21 UEFA Champions League group stage qualification was historic for Turkish football, as the club became the first Turkish club outside Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe, or Beşiktaş to reach the Champions League group stage in the modern era. The campaign included a remarkable 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford that generated enormous attention across Europe. Demba Ba scored the decisive second goal after Edin Džeko's opener, marking one of the most celebrated results in the club's history.
Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadium
İstanbul Başakşehir play at the Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadium, a modern arena with a capacity of approximately 17,000 in the Başakşehir district of Istanbul. Named after legendary Turkey manager Fatih Terim, the compact stadium creates a reasonable atmosphere for Süper Lig football. The district itself is a relatively modern, planned residential area on Istanbul's western outskirts, reflecting the club's origins as a municipal institution rather than a traditional working-class neighbourhood club.
