Royale Union Saint-Gilloise – Club History
Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, commonly known simply as Union SG, is one of Belgian football's oldest and most historically significant clubs, founded in 1897 in the Forest municipality of Brussels. Union were one of the dominant forces in Belgian football in the first half of the 20th century, winning 11 Belgian First Division titles, mostly in the period between 1904 and 1935. During this era, they were one of Europe's great clubs and their Stade Joseph Marien was the finest football venue in Belgium.
However, Union experienced a long decline after World War II, eventually being relegated from the First Division in 1973 and spending decades in the lower tiers of Belgian football, including a prolonged stint in the amateur leagues. Their story of decline, near-extinction, and eventual glorious return is one of the most remarkable in European football. The club was taken over by Brighton & Hove Albion's ownership group (Tony Bloom's Lakestar Sport) in 2018, and under the management of Felice Mazzù, Union made their return to the Belgian First Division in 2021.
Pro League Era & Titles
Union Saint-Gilloise's return to the Pro League in 2021–22 season was sensational – they led the championship for most of the season and ultimately finished second, just missing out on the title to Club Brugge in the championship playoff. Their instant competitiveness at the top level stunned Belgian football and European observers. In 2022–23, they again challenged at the top and qualified for the UEFA Europa League, performing admirably in Europe. Their honours include 11 Belgian First Division titles (all pre-1935) and they are currently one of the most exciting projects in Belgian football, combining historical tradition with modern, data-driven methods inspired by their Brighton connection.
Stadium
Union Saint-Gilloise play at the Stade Joseph Marien in Forest, Brussels. The stadium is a historic and atmospheric venue with a distinctive old-fashioned character. Its current capacity is approximately 9,000 – one of the smallest in the Pro League – but it creates an intense, traditional matchday atmosphere. The club's ownership has been working on plans to develop or replace the aging stadium to meet the demands of their current top-flight status and European ambitions. Despite its limited size, the Marien is considered one of the most charming grounds in Belgian football.
Most Famous Players
Given their long absence from the top flight, Union SG's most famous players come from two distinct eras: their early 20th-century golden age, and the modern revival. In the historic era, their teams featured Belgian internationals who were among the finest in Europe. In the modern revival era, Dante Vanzeir has been one of the most prolific Belgian strikers. Casper Nielsen, Cameron Puertas, and Lazare Amani have been key midfield figures. Christian Burgess has been a commanding centre-back. Teddy Teuma has been a skilful playmaker. The club has developed a reputation for finding undervalued talent and transforming them into standout performers.
Key Milestones
Union's 11 league titles in the early 20th century established them as one of Belgian football's founding powers. Their relegation in 1973 and subsequent decades in the wilderness make their remarkable return all the more extraordinary. The near-title challenge in their first season back in the Pro League (2021–22) was one of the great stories in recent European football. Their Brighton-connected ownership bringing modern analytics and recruitment expertise to one of Belgium's oldest clubs represents a fascinating blend of football tradition and innovation.
