Stade Joseph Mariën
The Stade Joseph Marien is the atmospheric and historic home of Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, located at Chaussee de Bruxelles 223 in the Forest district of Brussels. The stadium dates back to 1919 and is one of the oldest football venues in Belgium that remains in active use as a top-flight ground. Named after a former club president, the Stade Joseph Marien has a functional capacity of around 8,500 in its current form, though the wider site capacity is listed higher. Its location on a hillside in the southern Brussels commune of Forest gives it a characterful, old-fashioned quality that stands apart from modern stadium design.
Union Saint-Gilloise were one of Belgian football's dominant clubs in the early twentieth century, winning 11 league titles before the Second World War. After decades in the lower divisions, the club was revived and gained new investment, leading to their remarkable return to the Pro League in 2021 and their subsequent emergence as legitimate title challengers. The Stade Joseph Marien, with its wooden grandstands and intimate terracing, became the unlikely backdrop for some of Belgian football's most exciting recent performances, as USG competed against Anderlecht, Club Brugge, and Genk for league honours.
The stadium's traditional character is both a strength and a constraint. While it generates an intense, communal atmosphere that large modern venues cannot replicate, its limited capacity and ageing infrastructure have prompted discussions about future development. Plans for a new or expanded stadium have been explored as USG seek to build infrastructure that matches their sporting ambitions. In the meantime, the Stade Joseph Marien continues to provide one of Belgian football's most unique and memorable matchday experiences, beloved by supporters and recognised throughout European football as part of the club's remarkable revival story.
