Leicester City Football Club – Club History

Leicester City Football Club was founded in 1884 as Leicester Fosse and adopted the City name in 1919. Based in Leicester in the East Midlands, the club spent much of their history as a yo-yo club between the top two divisions of English football, reaching the FA Cup final on four occasions without winning it (1949, 1961, 1963, 1969). The club won the Football League Cup twice (1964 and 1997) but was largely seen as a respectable mid-table First Division/Premier League club rather than a force at the summit of the game.

That perception was shattered completely in 2015–16, when Leicester City achieved the greatest upset in the history of professional football by winning the Premier League title. Starting the season as 5000/1 outsiders, Claudio Ranieri's side – built on team spirit, tactical discipline, Jamie Vardy's pace, and Riyad Mahrez's brilliance – romped to the title with ten games to spare, finishing ten points clear of their nearest rivals. It remains one of the most extraordinary sporting achievements of the modern era.

Premier League Era & Titles

Leicester were promoted to the Premier League in 1994 and have had multiple spells in the top flight. Following their miraculous 2015–16 title triumph, they also won the FA Cup in 2021 under Brendan Rodgers, their first-ever FA Cup victory. However, the club suffered relegation in 2023, were promoted back to the Premier League in 2024 as Championship champions, and faced the challenge of re-establishing themselves in the top flight under a new manager.

Their total honours include 1 Premier League title, 1 FA Cup, 3 League Cups, and 2 Championship titles. The 2015–16 season stands as the defining achievement in the club's history.

Stadium

Leicester City moved into the King Power Stadium in 2002, leaving their old Filbert Street home where they had played since 1891. The King Power Stadium is located in the Waterside area of Leicester city centre and has a current capacity of approximately 32,262. It was significantly expanded in 2015–16 and provides an excellent matchday atmosphere. The stadium is named after the club's Thai owners, the King Power Group, who purchased the club in 2010. Average attendances are consistently close to capacity, with the ground sold out for most Premier League matches.

Most Famous Players

Leicester have had many distinguished players throughout their history. Gordon Banks, regarded by many as the greatest goalkeeper of all time, began his professional career at Leicester before his move to Stoke City. In the Premier League era, Emile Heskey was a powerful striker, while Neil Lennon was a combative and influential midfielder during the club's late 1990s period. During the miraculous 2015–16 season, Jamie Vardy (who had risen from non-league football) became a household name with his electric pace and goals, setting a Premier League record of scoring in 11 consecutive games. Riyad Mahrez won the PFA Players' Player of the Year award and was the creative genius of that title-winning side. N'Golo Kanté was the tireless defensive midfielder who moved to Chelsea the following season. More recently, Youri Tielemans, James Maddison, and Harvey Barnes have been key players.
