Crystal Palace Football Club – Club History

Crystal Palace Football Club was founded in 1905 and are based in Selhurst, south London. The club spent many decades moving between the top and lower divisions of English football, occasionally tasting First Division football before their most significant sustained period began in the early 1990s. Palace reached the FA Cup final in 1990, drawing 3–3 with Manchester United in a memorable Wembley match before losing the replay. That same year they finished third in the First Division – their highest-ever league finish.

Under Steve Coppell's management in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Palace developed a reputation for direct, physical football. Ian Wright and Mark Bright formed one of the most feared strike partnerships of the era. The club has traditionally served as a stepping stone for talented players while maintaining a strong identity rooted in south London.

Premier League Era & Titles

Crystal Palace were founding members of the Premier League in 1992 but were relegated after one season. They have had multiple stints in the top flight since, establishing a more permanent presence from 2013 onwards. Under Tony Pulis and then Alan Pardew, Palace developed a resilient style that earned mid-table finishes. The club reached the FA Cup final again in 2016, losing 2–1 to Manchester United after extra time. Under Patrick Vieira (2021–23) and Oliver Glasner (from 2024), Palace have continued to develop an attractive style while maintaining Premier League status. Crystal Palace have not won a major trophy, but their longevity in the top flight since 2013 represents their most sustained period of top-flight football.

Stadium

Crystal Palace have played at Selhurst Park since 1924. Located in Selhurst, south London, the ground has a current capacity of approximately 25,486. It is one of the most atmospheric grounds in the Premier League, particularly the Holmesdale Road End, which generates a fervent support. The club has had long-running plans for stadium redevelopment to expand capacity and improve facilities, with planning permission granted for a significant expansion that would take capacity to around 34,000. Selhurst Park is known for having the highest noise decibels of any Premier League ground and is a genuine fortress for the Eagles.

Most Famous Players

Crystal Palace has produced and harboured many notable players. Ian Wright is perhaps the most beloved figure in the club's history, his explosive goalscoring launching a career that later flourished at Arsenal. Mark Bright formed a prolific partnership with Wright. In more recent times, Wilfried Zaha became the defining player of the modern Palace era – the Ivory Coast winger spent two spells at the club and was arguably the most important player of any in the Premier League for a club of Crystal Palace's size, carrying their attacks for a decade. Mamadou Sakho, Andros Townsend, and Julian Speroni (a legendary goalkeeper who served the club for 14 years) are also fondly remembered. Michael Olise has more recently emerged as one of the most exciting young talents in English football.

Key Milestones

The 1990 FA Cup final run under Steve Coppell, featuring a stunning semi-final win over Liverpool, remains the club's proudest moment. The 2013 promotion play-off final win at Wembley under Ian Holloway re-established Palace in the Premier League for what has become a prolonged stay. The appointment of the club's first American co-owners (Josh Harris and David Blitzer) brought new investment and ambition. The stadium redevelopment plans represent a long-term commitment to the club's south London home.
