Sporting CP – Club History

Sporting Clube de Portugal, universally known as Sporting CP, was founded on 1 July 1906 in Lisbon, making them one of the oldest and most storied clubs in Portuguese and European football. The club grew out of the Lisbon sporting club culture of the early twentieth century and quickly established itself as one of the three giants of Portuguese football alongside Benfica and Porto — forming the "Big Three" that have dominated the Primeira Liga for over a century. Sporting's traditional green and white hooped shirts are among the most recognisable in European football, and their iconic home at the Estádio José Alvalade is one of the finest stadiums on the continent.

Sporting CP's identity is built on a proud tradition of youth development that has produced some of the most celebrated players in the history of football. Their Sporting Academy — Academia de Futebol Sporting — is regarded as one of the finest football schools in the world, and its most famous graduate, Cristiano Ronaldo, began his professional journey there before moving to Manchester United and embarking on a career that made him one of the greatest footballers of all time. Liga Portugal Era & Titles

Sporting CP have won the Primeira Liga title 20 times — placing them third in the all-time Portuguese league standings behind Benfica and Porto. Their championship eras include a dominant period in the 1950s and 1960s, and a remarkable title win in 2020–21 under coach Rúben Amorim that ended a nineteen-year wait for the championship — the longest title drought in the club's modern history. That triumph was celebrated with enormous joy across Lisbon and marked the beginning of what many hoped would be a new golden era for the club.

Sporting have also won the Taça de Portugal (Portuguese Cup) 17 times, the Taça da Liga 4 times, and achieved their greatest European result when they reached the UEFA Cup final in 2005, losing to CSKA Moscow in a narrow final. In the Champions League, Sporting have been regular group-stage participants and have produced some remarkable knockout results, including victories against Juventus and other major European clubs. Their 2021–22 Champions League campaign, which saw them reach the quarter-finals before losing to Manchester City, was one of the finest in the club's European history.

Stadium

Sporting CP play their home matches at the Estádio José Alvalade, one of the most modern and impressive football stadiums in Europe. Located in the Alvalade district of Lisbon, the current stadium was built for the UEFA Euro 2004 tournament held in Portugal and opened in August 2003, replacing the club's previous ground of the same name. With a capacity of approximately 50,000 spectators, the Estádio José Alvalade is an all-seater arena of outstanding quality, featuring a distinctive white and yellow colour scheme that makes it immediately recognisable. The stadium hosted multiple Euro 2004 matches and a Champions League semi-final, cementing its status as one of Europe's great football venues.

Most Famous Players

Sporting CP's most globally celebrated former player is Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined the academy at the age of twelve and made his professional debut for the first team before his famous transfer to Manchester United in 2003 for £12.24 million — a fee that now looks extraordinarily modest given what he became. Luis Figo, another Sporting academy graduate, became one of the world's finest players in the 1990s and won the Ballon d'Or in 2000. João Moutinho, Nani, and Ricardo Quaresma all emerged from the Sporting system to become Portuguese internationals. Bas Dost, the prolific Dutch striker, was one of the most celebrated modern figures at the club, scoring 77 goals in his time in Lisbon. Rúben Amorim revitalised the club as a coach before departing for Manchester United.
