Sporting CP

The Estadio Jose Alvalade is the modern home of Sporting CP, located in the Alvalade neighbourhood of Lisbon, adjacent to the club's extensive sporting facilities. The stadium holds 52,095 spectators and was inaugurated in August 2003 for the UEFA Euro 2004 tournament, replacing the original Estadio Jose Alvalade that had been in use since 1956. Designed by architect Tomas Taveira, the new stadium features a distinctive wave-shaped roof supported by external masts, creating a dramatic visual profile that has become one of Lisbon's most recognisable landmarks. The stadium's construction cost approximately 77 million euros and it was selected as a UEFA Euro 2004 venue, hosting four matches including a semi-final.

Sporting CP are one of the "Big Three" Portuguese clubs alongside Benfica and Porto, with 20 Primeira Liga titles, 17 Taca de Portugal victories, and a European Cup Winners' Cup triumph in 1964. The club is also one of the world's most celebrated football academies, having produced Cristiano Ronaldo - who joined the club aged 12 and made his first-team debut before his transfer to Manchester United - as well as Nani, Ricardo Quaresma, Simao Sabrosa, and many other world-class Portuguese internationals. This academy tradition is one of the most storied in global football and the Alvalade has been the stage for the first professional appearances of many celebrated careers.

The Estadio Jose Alvalade has hosted Champions League group stage matches on numerous occasions and has witnessed memorable European nights. Sporting's 2021 Primeira Liga title - their first in 19 years under coach Ruben Amorim - provoked extraordinary scenes of celebration inside and outside the stadium. The ground is consistently regarded as one of Portugal's finest football venues, with modern facilities, excellent sight lines, and a passionate atmosphere generated by the distinctive Sporting ultras. The surrounding Alvalade neighbourhood of northern Lisbon gives the stadium strong community connections, and the adjacent ice rink, swimming pools, and sports facilities reflect Sporting's identity as a comprehensive sporting institution.
