FC Twente – Club History
FC Twente, officially Football Club Twente Enschede, was founded on 1 July 1965 through the merger of two Enschede clubs, SC Enschede and Sportclub Enschede. Situated in the Twente region of the eastern Netherlands — a largely Protestant, industrial area historically associated with textile manufacturing — FC Twente grew to become the footballing pride of a region that is often overlooked in favour of the Randstad cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague. Despite coming from a smaller city, the club has competed at the highest level of Dutch football for most of its history and produced some memorable moments on both the domestic and European stage.
FC Twente play in their characteristic red and white vertical stripes, and their passionate fanbase from across the Overijssel province creates a formidable home atmosphere at De Grolsch Veste. The club's identity is deeply intertwined with the working-class culture of the Twente region, and supporters regard the club with an intense regional pride that rivals any in the Netherlands. After financial difficulties in the mid-2010s that led to a painful relegation and a period of rebuilding, FC Twente have returned to the Eredivisie as a competitive force, reclaiming their place among Dutch football's established clubs and rebuilding their reputation with younger talent and strong team cohesion.
Eredivisie Era & Titles
FC Twente won the Eredivisie title once, in the 2009–10 season, under the management of Steve McLaren — an achievement that remains the pinnacle of the club's history. That title-winning campaign was built on a collective team spirit, the brilliance of Brazilian striker Bryan Ruiz, and a tactical sophistication that saw Twente outlast Ajax and PSV in a memorable title race. The Eredivisie championship was followed by a UEFA Champions League campaign in 2010–11 which brought European football back to Enschede for the first time in decades.
Beyond their championship, FC Twente have been KNVB Cup winners three times — in 1977, 2001, and 2011 — with their 2011 cup triumph arriving just a year after their league title victory, making it a golden period for the club. They were also finalists in the UEFA Cup in 1975, losing to Borussia Mönchengladbach over two legs, which remains one of the finest European achievements by an Eredivisie club outside the traditional Big Three. Financial mismanagement in 2016 led to a dramatic collapse: the club was stripped of a European licence, relegated, and spent years rebuilding in the lower divisions before winning promotion back to the Eredivisie and stabilising.
Stadium
FC Twente play at De Grolsch Veste, located in Enschede, which has a capacity of approximately 30,000 spectators and is one of the finest provincial football stadiums in the Netherlands. Opened in 1998, the ground replaced the old Diekman Stadion and was built to a high modern standard with excellent sightlines and a superb atmosphere. Named after the local Grolsch brewery — one of the Netherlands' most famous beer brands — the stadium is a source of enormous pride for the Enschede community. Its design allows for intimate, intense matchday atmosphere, making it a difficult venue for visiting teams and one of the more atmospheric grounds in the Eredivisie.
Most Famous Players
FC Twente have been home to a number of outstanding players throughout their history. Epi Drost was a significant figure in the club's early years, while Rini Coolen served the club with distinction in midfield during the 1970s. In the modern era, Bryan Ruiz — the Costa Rican playmaker who was the creative engine of the 2009–10 title-winning side — is perhaps the most celebrated player ever to wear the Twente shirt. Nacer Chadli, who emerged through the Twente academy, went on to star for Tottenham Hotspur and the Belgian national team. Dusan Tadic began his European career at Twente before moving to Southampton and later Ajax, where he became one of the most influential players in the Eredivisie. Goalkeeper Sander Boschker, who served the club loyally for over a decade, is another icon of the Enschede faithful.
