Team History

UD Almería – Club History

UD Almería was founded in 1989 in Almería, a city on Spain's southeastern Mediterranean coast in Andalusia. Despite their relatively recent founding, the club has achieved remarkable heights in Spanish football, earning two La Liga promotions and competing at the top level of Spanish football. Playing in red and white stripes, Almería represent the Costa de Almería region, known for its beaches, film industry (Almería was a major spaghetti western filming location), and agricultural economy. The club's rise to La Liga football has been rapid and at times dramatic.

Almería's first La Liga appearance came in 2007–08 following their promotion. Under manager Hugo Sánchez, they surprised Spanish football by finishing eighth in their debut season and even qualifying for European competition. This achievement established Almería as a genuine La Liga club capable of competing at the top level. Their return to La Liga in 2022 following promotion was followed by another successful season before their subsequent relegation, illustrating the club's yo-yo pattern between the top two Spanish divisions.

La Liga and European Football

Almería's 2008–09 UEFA Cup qualification was one of the more remarkable achievements by a newly promoted La Liga club in recent Spanish history. Their eighth-place finish in their debut top-flight season was built on excellent collective organisation under Hugo Sánchez and demonstrated what well-run provincial clubs with committed ownership can achieve in Spain's top division. Their subsequent La Liga campaigns were less consistent, but the club's ability to return to the top flight has been demonstrated on multiple occasions.

Power Horse Stadium

Almería play at the Power Horse Stadium (Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos) in Almería, a modern facility built for the 2005 Mediterranean Games with a capacity of approximately 22,000. The stadium provides excellent facilities for La Liga and Segunda División football and creates a good atmosphere when full on important matches. Its Mediterranean setting and modern design make it one of southeastern Spain's better football venues, and La Liga seasons at the stadium have been celebrated occasions for the Almería community.
