RCD Mallorca – Club History
Real Club Deportivo Mallorca was founded in 1916 on the island of Mallorca, the largest of Spain's Balearic Islands in the western Mediterranean. The club has reflected the island's unique cultural identity throughout its history – a blend of Spanish mainland traditions and the distinct Balearic character. Wearing red and black (though the exact colouring has varied over the years), Mallorca have experienced significant fluctuation between Spain's top divisions, representing the challenges of operating a football club in an island community with limited local population but considerable international appeal.
Mallorca's most celebrated modern era came at the end of the 1990s and into the 2000s, when the club reached the Copa del Rey Final multiple times and competed in European football. Under coach Héctor Cúper and then later other managers, Mallorca assembled talented squads that punched above their weight in La Liga. The club has also navigated serious financial difficulties and multiple relegations, reflecting the volatility of mid-sized Spanish clubs without consistent investment.
La Liga Era & Titles
Mallorca have won the Copa del Rey once (1998 – defeating Athletic Club) and the Copa de la Liga once (1991). They have been regular participants in European competition, including the UEFA Cup and the Cup Winners' Cup, where they reached the final in 1999 before losing to Lazio 2-1. Their best La Liga finish was 5th in the early 2000s. In recent seasons, under various managers and with investment from new ownership including former Barcelona president Joan Gaspart and subsequently Maheta Molango's group, Mallorca have re-established themselves in La Liga after spending time in the lower divisions. Steve Nash (the basketball legend) has been part of the ownership consortium in recent years.
Stadium
Mallorca play their home matches at the Estadi de Son Moix (formerly named Iberostar Estadi and Visit Mallorca Estadi under various naming rights deals). Located in Palma de Mallorca, the stadium opened in 1999 and has a capacity of approximately 23,142. The stadium was a significant investment at the time of construction and remains a modern facility. Palma's status as one of Europe's most visited tourist destinations means that away fans and neutral visitors frequently attend matches, giving Son Moix a more cosmopolitan character than most La Liga grounds. The island setting, Mediterranean climate, and picturesque surroundings make it one of La Liga's most distinctively attractive venues.
Most Famous Players
Mallorca have hosted several notable players throughout their history. The club's greatest era in the late 1990s featured players such as Dani (the Brazilian forward), Samuel Eto'o – who made his professional debut at Mallorca on loan from Real Madrid before becoming a global superstar – and Iván Helguera, who went on to play for Real Madrid. Julián Calero and Xisco were popular Mallorcan-born players who represented the club with distinction. The Brazilian forward Junior, who later played for Atlético Madrid, had a stint at the club. In the modern era, Vedat Muriqi has been one of La Liga's most physical and powerful forwards, and goalkeeper Predrag Rajković has been a reliable presence. The club has traditionally relied on a mix of experienced La Liga players, foreign signings, and homegrown talent.
Key Milestones
Mallorca's 1998 Copa del Rey triumph – defeating Athletic Club in the final – remains the greatest achievement in the club's history. Their 1999 Cup Winners' Cup Final appearance against Lazio in Birmingham was their furthest European reach and a landmark moment for Balearic football. The discovery and development of Samuel Eto'o – who went on to become one of Africa's greatest players and a three-time Champions League winner with Barcelona and Inter – represents the club's most significant contribution to world football. Multiple relegations and promotions have tested the club's resilience, and their return to La Liga in the 2020s, backed by new ownership investment, represents a new chapter in Mallorca's ambitious journey.
