CD Nacional – Club History
CD Nacional was founded in 1910 on the island of Madeira, Portugal, in Funchal – making it one of the very few top-flight European clubs permanently based on an Atlantic island. The club's home on Madeira creates remarkable logistical challenges, as all away matches require flights, yet Nacional have maintained Primeira Liga status across multiple eras and represent the island alongside fierce rivals Marítimo in one of Portuguese football's most geographically unusual local derbies. Playing in black and red, Nacional are Madeira's most historically successful football club.
Nacional's achievements in Portuguese football include multiple Primeira Liga seasons and the experience of competing in European competition through cup victories and league finishes. The club's Estádio da Madeira, with its panoramic views of Funchal and the Atlantic Ocean, provides one of Portuguese football's most dramatically situated venues. Competing in the Primeira Liga from an Atlantic island 1,000 kilometres from mainland Portugal is itself an extraordinary achievement that deserves recognition.
