Atalanta BC – Club History
Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio, founded in 1907 in Bergamo in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, is one of the most remarkable stories in modern football. For most of its history, Atalanta was considered a provincial club — respected but not dominant — spending periods between Serie A and Serie B and rarely threatening the upper echelons of Italian football. The club's identity has always been rooted in Bergamo and its football-mad community, the Atalantini, who have supported their team with fierce passion for generations.
The transformation of Atalanta into a European football powerhouse under coach Gian Piero Gasperini (appointed 2016) and sporting director Ivan Gasperini is one of the great football stories of the modern era. Through an innovative attacking football philosophy, outstanding youth development, and intelligent recruitment, Atalanta reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in 2019–20 with a breathtaking 3–0 win over Valencia and a 4–3 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the last eight. Their attacking brand of football, which regularly produces 70+ goals per season, has attracted global attention and admiration. In 2023–24, Atalanta crowned this remarkable era by winning the UEFA Europa League — beating Bayer Leverkusen 3–0 in the final in Dublin.
Serie A Era & Titles
Atalanta have won the Coppa Italia once, in 1963. While they have not won a Serie A title, the club has finished in the top four multiple consecutive seasons under Gasperini, competing in the Champions League for the first time in their history in 2019. They have established themselves as consistent top-six challengers and a model of sustainability in modern football. Their Europa League title in 2024 is by far the biggest honour in club history.
Full honours: Coppa Italia – 1 (1963); UEFA Europa League – 1 (2024). Beyond trophies, Atalanta's youth academy (known as La Cantera) is considered among the finest in Europe, having produced players such as Gianluigi Donnarumma, Pierluigi Gollini, and many other Italian internationals.
Stadium
Atalanta play at the Gewiss Stadium (formerly Atleti Azzurri d'Italia), located in Bergamo, Lombardy. The stadium, which underwent significant renovation between 2019 and 2021, now has a capacity of approximately 21,300. Despite being one of the smaller stadiums in Serie A, the Gewiss Stadium is known for an incredibly intimate and electric atmosphere. Home attendances regularly sell out. The renovation transformed the arena into a modern, purpose-built football stadium with excellent sightlines and a superb match-day experience. Atalanta's loyal fanbase fills the stadium even for Champions League and Europa League nights.
Most Famous Players
Atalanta has historically developed exceptional talent through its acclaimed youth system. Pierino Prati, Mario Boniperti, and Carletto Mazzone all had associations with the club in earlier eras. In the modern era, striker Josip Iličić was one of the outstanding players during the 2019–20 Champions League run, scoring four goals in a single Champions League match against Valencia. Alejandro Gómez (Papu) was a beloved captain and creative force. Duván Zapata and Luis Muriel formed a prolific striking partnership. Ademola Lookman became a fan hero after his hat-trick in the 2024 Europa League final. Teun Koopmeiners and Mario Pašalić have been standout midfielders. The club's ability to identify and develop talent — including Gianluigi Donnarumma before his loan departure — is a key part of its identity.
