Brighton & Hove Albion – Club History
Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club was founded in 1901. The club spent most of their history bouncing between the lower divisions of English football, with their most notable earlier period coming under manager Brian Clough in the 1970s and a spell in the First Division in the late 1970s and early 1980s, culminating in a famous FA Cup final appearance in 1983 against Manchester United, which ended in a replay defeat.
Brighton experienced a period of serious financial difficulty in the 1990s and early 2000s, including a spell groundless at Gillingham's stadium. The club's fortunes changed dramatically with the arrival of Tony Bloom as majority shareholder in 2009. Bloom invested significantly in the club's infrastructure, including the construction of the American Express Community Stadium (known as the Amex or Falmer Stadium), which opened in 2011. Under manager Graham Potter and then Roberto De Zerbi, Brighton established themselves as one of the most attractive teams in English football.
Premier League Era & Titles
Brighton achieved promotion to the Premier League in 2017 under Chris Hughton and have remained in the top flight ever since, establishing themselves as one of the division's most consistent performers. Under Graham Potter from 2019, they developed a distinctive style built on possession football and intelligent pressing, attracting widespread admiration. Potter left for Chelsea in 2022 and was replaced by Roberto De Zerbi, whose side finished sixth in the Premier League in 2022–23 – the club's best-ever league finish – qualifying for European competition for the first time in their history.
Brighton do not have major national title wins, but their sixth-place Premier League finish in 2023 and Europa League qualification represents a pinnacle in the club's history.
Stadium
Brighton's home is the American Express Community Stadium (the Amex), opened in July 2011 after years of the club playing away from Hove during their groundless period. Located in Falmer near the University of Sussex campus, the stadium has a capacity of 31,876. It is known for its excellent facilities and atmosphere. The club has outlined plans to expand capacity to around 40,000 to meet the demand from their growing fanbase following sustained Premier League success.
Most Famous Players
Bobby Zamora is among Brighton's most beloved former players, having featured in their rise through the divisions in the early 2000s. In the Premier League era, Glenn Murray was a reliable goalscorer who fired the club into the top flight. Lewis Dunk, the club captain, has given years of loyal and excellent service. Alexis Mac Allister became a World Cup winner with Argentina in 2022 while at Brighton, before moving to Liverpool. Moisés Caicedo was a sought-after midfielder before his record-breaking transfer to Chelsea. Kaoru Mitoma became one of the most exciting wingers in the league, while Julio Enciso and Evan Ferguson have emerged as exciting young talents.
Key Milestones
Brighton's promotion to the Premier League in 2017 was a transformational moment for the club. Their survival through years of financial hardship, including groundlessness in the 1990s, makes the modern-day story all the more remarkable. The opening of the Amex Stadium in 2011 was the platform for everything that followed. The club's sixth-place finish and European debut in 2023–24 cemented their status as an established Premier League club and one of the most progressive in England.
