The American Express Community Stadium
The American Express Community Stadium, commonly known as the Amex or the Falmer Stadium, is the modern home of Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club, located at Village Way in Falmer, East Sussex. The ground holds 31,876 spectators and opened in July 2011, finally giving Brighton a permanent home after years of groundsharing at Gillingham and then Withdean Athletic Stadium. The construction followed decades of planning battles and financial difficulties, making the stadium's completion a milestone moment in the club's history.
The Amex is a purpose-built, modern facility designed by KSS Group, featuring a distinctive curved roof that follows the contours of the surrounding South Downs landscape. Its position near the University of Sussex campus and the rolling hills of East Sussex gives it a unique aesthetic among Premier League grounds. The stadium quickly established a reputation for excellent facilities, strong acoustics, and a loyal, passionate support base. It has hosted Premier League football consistently since Brighton's promotion in 2017 and has also served as a venue for UEFA Europa League matches.
Brighton's sustained rise under American chairman Tony Bloom and a series of innovative managers has transformed the Amex into one of the Premier League's most interesting matchday environments. The club's progressive, data-driven approach to football has brought European football to Falmer for the first time, and the stadium has welcomed continental opposition to East Sussex. Expansion plans have been approved by local authorities to increase capacity to around 34,000, in line with the club's continued ambitions at the top level of English football.
