Mewa Arena
The Mewa Arena is the home of 1. FSV Mainz 05, located at Eugen-Salomon-Strasse 1 in Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate, close to the Rhine river and the borders with Hesse and Baden-Wurttemberg. The stadium holds 34,000 spectators and opened in July 2011, replacing the old Bruchwegstadion which had served the club for over a century. The ground was initially known as the Coface Arena before adopting the current Mewa name in 2018. It was built as a purpose-designed football venue on the Volkspark site in the south of the city and represented a major step forward in capacity and facilities for a club that had only recently established itself in the Bundesliga after years of lower-league struggle.
Mainz 05's transformation into a stable Bundesliga club is closely associated with Jurgen Klopp, who managed the club from 2001 to 2008 and instilled the counter-pressing philosophy that he would later take to worldwide acclaim at Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool. The Bruchweg, their old ground, was the setting for those formative years, while the Mewa Arena opened as the club consolidated their top-flight status. Thomas Tuchel, another coach who went on to European football's highest levels, also managed Mainz. The Mewa Arena has hosted Europa League group stage football on multiple occasions, bringing continental competition to the Rhine-Main region.
The Mewa Arena's modern design features a distinctive cantilevered roof providing full coverage of the four stands, and the compact layout ensures a tight, atmospheric experience for supporters. The stadium is consistently well-attended for Bundesliga fixtures, with Mainz's working-class fanbase generating a vocal and passionate atmosphere from the terraces. The club's so-called "Macher" philosophy - literally "doers" - reflects a community club culture that values hard work and regional identity above glamour. Located just 40 kilometres from Frankfurt and close to the Rhine, the stadium also serves as a focal point for supporters from across the greater Rhineland region.
