Team History

Vitória SC – Club History

Vitória Sport Clube was founded in 1922 in Guimarães, a historic city in northern Portugal considered the birthplace of the Portuguese nation. The club draws enormous civic pride from this historic identity – the city's castle and palace are where Portugal was born in the twelfth century – and their motto "Onde Portugal nasceu" (Where Portugal was born) reflects this deep connection to national origins. Playing in black and white vertical stripes, Vitória Guimarães are one of Portugal's established first-tier clubs and regular Primeira Liga competitors who have challenged for titles and European places across multiple eras.

Vitória SC have competed in the Portuguese Primeira Liga throughout much of their history and have won the Taça de Portugal (Portuguese Cup) on two occasions. The club qualified for European competition on multiple occasions and has been a regular presence in both the UEFA Cup and Europa League. Their European adventures have brought continental opponents to the Estádio D. Afonso Henriques – named after Portugal's founding king – and given the historic city of Guimarães regular continental exposure.

Portuguese Football History

Vitória Guimarães have been regular Primeira Liga top-half finishers and have pushed for European qualification through consistent performances. Their cup victories and strong league seasons have qualified them for the Europa League on multiple occasions. Under various coaches, the club has demonstrated the quality of Portuguese provincial football's best, developing players who have moved on to larger clubs both domestically and internationally. The club's connection to Guimarães' deep historical identity gives their football a distinctive character.

Estádio Dom Afonso Henriques

Vitória SC play at the Estádio D. Afonso Henriques in Guimarães, a stadium named after Portugal's founding king. The ground holds approximately 30,000 supporters and was one of the venues for UEFA Euro 2004. Its dramatic location in the historic city and the passion of the Vitória supporters create one of Portuguese football's more atmospheric matchday experiences. The stadium has hosted Europa League matches on numerous occasions, bringing continental opponents to Portugal's birthplace.
