Estádio Dom Afonso Henriques
The Estadio Dom Afonso Henriques is the proud home of Vitoria SC of Guimaraes, located at Rua de Sao Goncalo 505 in Guimaraes, a UNESCO World Heritage city in the Minho region of northern Portugal. The stadium holds 30,008 spectators and has been in use since 1965, having replaced the club's earlier grounds. Named after Dom Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal who was born in Guimaraes in 1109, the stadium carries the weight of Portuguese national origin - Guimaraes is considered the birthplace of Portugal and describes itself as the "cidade berco" (cradle city). This deep historical significance gives the ground and its club an identity rooted in the very foundations of the Portuguese nation.
Vitoria SC Guimaraes have been a consistent presence in Portuguese football for many decades, winning the Taca de Portugal in 2013 and competing regularly in European competition through UEFA Cup and Europa League participation. The club's European campaigns have brought continental football to the Estadio Dom Afonso Henriques and given the club an international profile. Vitoria are known for their passionate, intense support and are considered one of Portuguese football's most authentic club communities, deeply embedded in the civic and cultural life of one of Portugal's most historically significant cities.
The Estadio Dom Afonso Henriques has been progressively modernised over its history, with four covered stands providing reasonable matchday comfort. Vitoria's home matches generate some of the Primeira Liga's most intense atmospheres, with the club's supporter groups creating colourful and vociferous displays. Guimaraes's designation as a European Capital of Culture in 2012 and its medieval city centre - a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001 - give the city a cultural prominence far beyond its modest size. FC Vitoria de Guimaraes and their historic stadium serve as central institutions in a city that is simultaneously one of Portugal's most visited tourist destinations and one of its most passionate football communities.
