Preston North End – Club History

Preston North End Football Club was founded in 1880 and holds a unique and immortal place in football history as "The Invincibles" – the first team ever to win the English First Division championship without losing a single match, in the 1888–89 season. Not only did they go unbeaten throughout the league campaign, but they also won the FA Cup that season without conceding a goal, completing the double in the sport's very first professional year. This remarkable feat established Preston North End as one of football's greatest historical milestones, and "Proud Preston" continues to carry that legacy with enormous pride.

Preston was one of the eight founding members of the Football League in 1888 and dominated that inaugural season to a degree that has never been replicated. Manager William Sudell assembled a team of Scottish professionals – controversial at the time – and combined them with English talent to create an unstoppable machine. John Goodall, Jimmy Ross, and their teammates were the first true professional football superstars, and their unbeaten title win remains one of the sport's most remarkable achievements. Preston also won the championship in 1889–90, making them the first back-to-back champions.

Post-War and Modern Era

After their founding-era dominance, Preston spent much of the twentieth century as a proud Championship and lower-division club. Tom Finney, widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers England has ever produced, gave extraordinary service to the club over a 14-year career, playing over 400 matches and scoring 187 goals. Finney never won a major trophy with Preston despite his remarkable individual quality, and this typified the club's endearing but frustrating inability to convert talent into silverware in the post-war era. The club's history in the Championship and lower leagues has been marked by near-misses and occasional play-off heartbreak.

Deepdale Stadium

Preston North End play at Deepdale Stadium, which holds the distinction of being the world's oldest football stadium still in use by a professional club. Football has been played at Deepdale since 1878, predating even the Football League itself. The ground holds approximately 24,000 supporters and has been significantly modernised, with a new stand named in honour of Tom Finney. The Tom Finney Stand's photographic mural of Finney performing his famous "Splash" – scoring while engulfed by a wave of water on a waterlogged pitch – is one of English football's most iconic images. Deepdale combines historic character with modern facilities.

Legendary Players

Tom Finney is unquestionably the greatest player in Preston's history and one of England's greatest ever footballers. A versatile, skilful, and prolific attacker who played across the forward line, Finney won over 75 England caps and represented the ultimate in loyalty by spending his entire career at Preston. Nick Ross and John Goodall were the stars of the unbeaten 1889 side. Alex James, who later became a legend at Arsenal, had early career connections to Preston. In more recent times, manager David Moyes gave a young Preston side the foundations before his departure to Everton launched a distinguished managerial career.
