Pisa Sporting Club – Club History

Pisa Sporting Club was founded in 1909 in the city of Pisa, Tuscany — a city famous the world over for its Leaning Tower and its position as one of Italy's great medieval maritime republics. The club's colours, black and blue, reflect the civic identity of a city with deep historical pride, and Pisa has long served as the principal football institution for the province. Like the city's famous tower, Pisa Sporting Club has experienced its share of tilting fortunes — periods of top-flight football followed by long spells in the lower divisions — but the club has maintained its identity and ambition throughout more than a century of history.

Pisa's most celebrated era came in the 1980s and early 1990s, when under the presidency of Romeo Anconetani the club reached Serie A and competed at the top level for several consecutive seasons. That period produced notable players and memorable campaigns, and the club's Stadio Arena Garibaldi became a respected venue in Italian football. After Anconetani's death in 1998, the club fell into financial difficulties and tumbled through the divisions. A new chapter opened in the late 2010s when the club came under the ownership of the Corrado family, who invested significantly in returning Pisa to prominence. The club reached Serie B and, with sustained investment, achieved promotion to Serie A for the 2025–26 season — their first top-flight campaign in over 30 years.

Serie A Era & Titles

Pisa have never won Serie A or the Coppa Italia. Their greatest achievement remains their extended period in Serie A during the 1980s, when they finished as high as sixth place and competed against Italy's elite clubs. The 1988–89 season, finishing sixth, was their finest. Pisa have also won the Serie C title and been Serie B promotion candidates multiple times. Their promotion to Serie A in 2025, achieved under coach Alberto Aquilani, represents their greatest achievement since the 1980s golden era and marks the culmination of years of steady rebuilding.

The club's return to Serie A in 2025–26 is supported by new infrastructure investment and a commitment to developing young Tuscan talent alongside targeted recruitment. Pisa represent an important cultural institution for the city, and their top-flight presence carries significance beyond football for a community deeply attached to its football club.

Stadium

Pisa play their home matches at the Stadio Arena Garibaldi – Romeo Anconetani, named in honour of the club's legendary president who shaped the club during its golden era. Located in the heart of Pisa, the stadium has a capacity of approximately 9,000 to 10,000 in its current configuration, though renovation work has been discussed. The ground dates to 1919, making it one of Italy's oldest football stadiums, and has a characterful, traditional atmosphere. Its location in the urban fabric of the city, surrounded by residential streets, gives it an authentic character typical of older Italian football grounds. Expansion and renovation plans have been discussed to bring it up to full Serie A standards for the club's return to the top flight.

Most Famous Players

Pisa's most celebrated alumnus is undoubtedly Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, the Ukrainian defensive midfielder who played for the club in the early 2000s before his career took him to Shakhtar Donetsk and Bayern Munich. From the golden 1980s era, Roberto Muzzi was a prolific striker who flourished at the club. German international Hannes Bongartz played at Pisa during their Serie A years. In recent times, midfielder Nicolas Gaich and forward Giuseppe Mastinu have been key contributors during the club's Serie B years. Alberto Aquilani, who managed the club to promotion in 2025, was himself a former Italian international with significant top-flight experience as a player.
