Arena Garibaldi - Stadio Romeo Anconetani
The Arena Garibaldi - Stadio Romeo Anconetani is the intimate home of AC Pisa 1909, located at Via di Gello 25 in Pisa, Tuscany. The stadium holds 10,442 spectators and has been in use since 1919, making it one of the oldest continuously used professional football grounds in Italy. Named in honour of Romeo Anconetani, the legendary club president who guided Pisa through their most celebrated era in the 1980s and 1990s, the ground occupies a compact site in the San Michele degli Scalzi neighbourhood of the city, surrounded by residential buildings. The arena's modest size belies its rich history and the passionate attachment of the Pisan football community.
AC Pisa 1909 enjoyed their most celebrated period in the late 1980s under Anconetani's presidency, when the club rose to Serie A for the first time and qualified for the UEFA Cup, bringing continental football to the banks of the Arno. The club attracted notable players and competed in the top flight for several seasons, with the Arena Garibaldi hosting Serie A clubs from across Italy. After Anconetani's death in 1999, the stadium was renamed in his honour. Pisa subsequently experienced a long decline through the Italian football pyramid before rebuilding under new ownership, eventually returning to Serie B and establishing themselves as consistent contenders for promotion.
The Arena Garibaldi's compact dimensions create an extremely intimate football experience, with supporters close to the pitch and the stands generating significant noise relative to the small capacity. The main stand is a traditional Italian covered single-tier structure, while the curvas at each end provide standing terraces for the most vocal sections of support. Pisa's location near the famous Leaning Tower and the Piazza dei Miracoli gives the city a worldwide cultural recognition that far exceeds its football stature. The club's current ambitions to return to Serie A have renewed investment interest and excitement among the passionate Pisan fanbase.
