GD Estoril Praia – Club History

GD Estoril Praia was founded in 1939 in Estoril, a glamorous coastal resort town on the Estoril Coast (Costa do Estoril) west of Lisbon, known for its casino, Formula One racing history, and elegant Atlantic setting. The club, nicknamed the Canarinhos (Canaries) for their distinctive yellow shirts, has had multiple periods in Portugal's Primeira Liga and qualified for European competition in the early 2010s during their most successful modern period. Estoril's beautiful coastal setting and connection to the glamour of the Portuguese Riviera give the club a distinctive character in Portuguese football.

Estoril's most celebrated modern achievement came under coach José Couceiro in the 2012–13 season, when the club finished fourth in the Primeira Liga and qualified for the UEFA Europa League group stage. This was a genuinely remarkable achievement for a club from the coastal resort town and generated enormous excitement and pride across the municipality. Their Europa League competition brought clubs to the João Pereira Coutinho Municipal Stadium for the first time at the group stage level.
